Name a few good sites to download music from.

i went to cnet.com to see what programs are good to download and just cant see one worth downloading even though most are free.

    requirements.

    1)Free or inexpensive
2)little/no spyware or other malicious crap
    3)good selection
4)easily uninstallable and ALL of adware removeable
    5) music transportability--can be played on any cd player--so it rules out itunes..from what I hear

    Suggestions?

you are allowed to burn itunes music to a CD (audio CD), and you can rip that CD back to MP3 if you wish.. I think itunes is the way to go if you don't want to steal your music, the quality is better than most of the random muck you're likely to find on P2P networks anyway.

when you rip it back, you lose copy protection. That's the part he was trying to emphasize ;)

winmx and soulseek are my favorites.

the former is better for movies and individual songs, the latter if you like finding albums whole instead of just singles. soulseek has the unique feature of downloading files only from a single user, and that's good for ensuring file quality/integrity, but can be bad for those with an "instant-gratification" streak. ;)

                  oh, and WRT this:

think itunes is the way to go if you don't want to steal your music
don't buy that RIAA bullshit. there are three very specific and important words in the DMCA regarding piracy, and they are:

                  "exact digital copy"

MP3 is a lossy compression format, and in terms of quality it's not the same as having the CD, even at 192k or 256k. case would be closed if someone had the balls and a good lawyer...
                  past:

                  1986 325e (turbo dorito)
                  1991 318ic (5-lug ITB)
                  1985 323i baur
                  current:
                  1995 M3 (suspension, 17x9/255-40, borla)

soulseek. winmx started sucking a few years ago when the new version came out, for me at least.

iTunes is a great program. By far the best interface and fast easy selection to legit high quality music. Good program for rpiing all your own cd's and burning them. However, it doesnt encode in Mp3 (its some funky other file .aac Audio File), which makes it only playable by the itunes program

AAC is mpeg-4 audio. Higher quality, less space.

You can change this preference so it rips to mp3

If you like the RIAA watching all your downloads.
