I didn't have a chance to respond to a few posts because the thread got locked yesterday. I am going to ignore any negative posts and would appreciate that others do also so the thread stays open.
Here are some pictures of the water/air intercooler components. We chose a water/air intercooler for two basic reasons.
1. It's has superior efficiency vs. an air/air unit. Water can absord heat at a rate of 13x that of air. You can therefore use a much smaller core. The water flows through the small surface area of the core and the charged air flows over the large surface of the core. The core for the 535i is 3x4.5x18. The charged air has 81 square inches of surface area to flow through. Imagine trying to fit an air/air intercooler someplace with end tanks that have 81sqin.
2. Packaging.
An air/water system is very simple. There are four components.
1. Intercooler
2. Reservoir
3. Pump
4. Heat Exchanger
The pump runs the entire time the engine runs. It circulates the water through the intercooler where it absorbs heat from the charged air to the reservoir and then to the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger acts like a radiator.
In a street application the same water will never see the intercooler twice. The intercooler has the same efficiency regardless of the vehicle speed.
In a road race application an air/air intercooler is preffered because it offer a cooling medium at a constant temperature and a vehicle speed that is fairly high.
