    use the timing mark ontop of the cam sproket. and line up the mark on the crank.

    everything else should all line up from there.

      i found the mark on top of the cam sproket but no mark on the cam sproket to line it up to,

        There's a mark on the sprocket, and a corresponding one on the head. I'd get them lined up before bolting the head on. If you have to turn the cam through 180* to get the marks lined up with the head bolted down, it ain't gonna work (unless you take off all the rockers).

          You should really pull the head and have it checked out. The angle at which the valves would impact the pistons put a lot of stress on the valves and valve guides. You will most likely have an oil leak into the combustion chamber if anything bent in the slightest.

            If you are going to do all that work, you might as well get a new eta head or an I head.

            They are really cheap, and you will be kicking yourself later if anything does turn out to be broken.

              i put a new timing belt in and distributor, but i didnt put all the coolant hoses or the altenator, waterpump belts. just enough to crank the engine to see if it will fire

              i turned the key to start it, the engine spins but it doesnt sound right at all,it sounds just if you crank the engine with the plugs out. it back fired once. there was gas in the rubber boot after the afm.

                      the cam sproket groove is lined up to the groove on the head, and the crankshaft groove is lined up to the v shape nocht, is there anything else to do to the timing?

                          before you set the tension on the tensioner, rotate the engine a few times in normal direction to let things settle, then set the tensioner. if you feel any resistance or hear anything then you have a problem... i would also do a CLT to see if you have any major problem.

                              compression leakdown test. it tells you where youre losing compression and what percentage your losing it at.

                                When I broke a timing belt on an M20 it also looked fine from under the valve cover. Pulling the head revealed half a dozen bent valves. After your description of how it cranks it's a one in a million shot that you don't have a few bent valves at the very least. The clatter sound you described might mean worse problems like a broken valve and damaged piston though. When mine broke at about 1500 rpm it just shuddered and quit, no clattering. The worst effect on the pistons was some of the carbon was knocked off...
