I have a book I ordered from amazon called "The Gold Plated Porsche" How a dude ended up spending a fortune and a marriage on his porsche.
you can buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Plated-Po...4116014&sr=8-1
I'm thinking about writing the followup "The gold plated, err bronzit, e30"

im also gonna say 911 SC. great car. my dad owns one and has owned a bunch of others in my lifetime. next to the SC in the garage is an 02 911 SC'd by vortech with the fuckin works. all around, great cars. but if you need a cheap porsche.. you need not apply as theres no such thing. not a real porsche anyway.

The Gold Plated Porsche is a good book, just one of many I read researching my possible 911 purchase. You won't learn a whole lot about the car from that book, but it's a fantastic story.
The Used 911 Story is probably your best book for a 911 purchase. However, my best suggestion to learn about any model is to read Pelican Parts' message boards. Just search for things like 'cheap 944' or 'entry level 911' or something like that, should get you several threads. Don't post a new one asking the same question as they'll likely ignore you. Some really, really good info over there.sigpic

930 is and was the best. for 10 to 15k you can get a very nice one.
We picked one up last week that had an oil leak... was a $2 seal for the oil pressure sending unit. Someone else did a PPI before us, the shop added up $7000 of repairs, involving the oil leak and other minor things...
Here is the car. $2 is all we have spent to get it running... I don't forsee anything else for a while.
Listed Price: $18000
Purchase Price: $10000

On a side note IMO the 944 is a very under rated car. The engineering in them is really cool if you've been around them at all. The rear suspension is really amazing, the driveline is uber cool (they have front engine with torque tube & rear gearbox) and it's all very adjustable from ride height to mods. I know a guy who's into 911's and 44 race cars. The standard 8v motor can make you happy but IMO not all that much more than a well prepped e30. Weight distribution will be better (maybe) but what do you really want? A money pit 944 or a pristine 911?
Boxter = sh*t IMO... save up, buy a house, get a 911 if/when you can afford one. Go big or go home & the 944 makes a great track car but on the street has the stigma of the "poor man's Porsche" till it blows your doors off!! Some of the parts in the 944 are interchangable with Audi/VW but the 944 isn't that much more than our cars. Be honest though - you want a classy 911 like a 71 911 right? Save up, keep driving the e30 and put your money into a 401k or IRA so you can retire at 55 and actually drive the damn thing somewhere other than TO WORK!

A Porsche is my next car. I have waited and waited and I'm not waiting too much longer. In the last 2 years I have put just about $200k into a complete home remodel/rebuild. I am almost done and the Porsche is NEXT.
From all the looking and research I've done, I think the P-car to own is either the '87-'89 911 (g50 transmission, better ventilation, cooler/better H4 headlights) or the '95 - '98 993 Carrera 2 6spd.
Find the cleanest, best kept, most well maintained one you can afford and have a slush fund set aside for repairs.
