    New M3 motor details released

    from jalopnik:

Dutch car site AutoTelegraaf has the grisly details of the new V8 engine BMW's putting into the upcoming M3. Let's just say, whoever chose 420 horsepower and 295 ft-lbs of torque in the pool, you're a winner. (Not that there was a pool, but we're sure Audi's keeping a running tally of specs). Apparently, the 4.0-liter V8 is quite a rev monster, seeing it was derived from the company's 5.0-liter V10. Peak horsepower comes on at a soaring 8,300 rpm. But owing to BMW's Double VANOS variable-valve system, 85% of torque is available at 2,000 rpm. What these disparate figures mean for driveability remains to be seen, but the talk is of a smoothed torque curve up to 6,000 rpm. We'll find out after the M3's launch at the Frankfurt motor show in September, and subsequent market launch.
    so there it is

Was talking with a Local heavy hitter yesterday and he's number one for our area for the new E92 M3. Paid in full for it already, frightning since prices are not annouced yet.

If peak is at 8,300 that means it must safely rev up to 9grand? M10's & M20's will break at that motor's peak HP nevermind when the curve starts to drop off. I'd hope that at least the curve drops SHARPLY after 8300....

Guy sitting next to me says "my wrx redlines at 6500.... That's only a little more than my car" So I remind him that this is a V-8 and that he has a turbo'd 4-banger... When he says "SO?" I just shake my head & walk away.

I bet some wild cams will shift that torque and hp band way up, so fuh raze people can enjoy straight illing power output.

Those have got to be the most beautiful stock headers to grace a BMW. Way better than M42 manifolds!!!

It is kind of depressing to see all the new cars coming out with so much more power than the older ones... It's got to stop somewhere, right? I'm with xLibelle, less can be more. Make it more of a raw sports car and let it return to it's roots a little bit. If BMW wanted their first M3 to be a "muscle car" they could have stuck the S38 in it, but they didn't because it was built for a different purpose.

I'm not saying I hate horsepower, or I hate going fast... and I'm not complaining. I just get sad when I see all the cool new cars coming out with 400 or 500 or 600hp and I know that my lowly car that I am investing so much time and money in only has 220hp. On the flip side, my 220hp car is still going to be a lot of fun and not cost nearly what a new M3 will cost. I'm confused...

They built the first M3 for 2.3 liter racing (and later 2.5 and 2 liter)... It made lots of HP for those classes w/o turbo. The New M3 probably outhandles, outbrakes and outaccerlerates all the old cars... even if it weighs more and is more numb...

Did they ever release any chassis dimensions, like weight?

nobody here has even driven the new M3 (or even the old one, I'm guessing) and you're all so quick to judge it. but I guess since few here could afford one anyway it really doesn't matter..

aside from that, who's going to be the first to swap one into an E30? :D

lol. don't think I would even want to try a nightmare like that.. I mean, the ix drivetrain will take more of a beating than people assume, but I'm pretty sure that motor would grenade the front differential in short order.

the power curve is nuts.. looks like the redline is about 8500. and the torque curve is indeed very flat.. who cares about the peak?
