    Quick question re: jumping

I need to jump my car and I searched on here and it seems most people recommend using the + terminal in th engine bay. However, my hood is a little sticky and the car I want to jump it with is right behind it in the driveway anyways.

If I connect the + red terminal to the battery in the trunk, is there anything back there in the trunk area I can connect the - black terminal too? I peeled back the carpeting and there are a couple metal pieces but Im not sure if theyd be ideal or not as they seem to be pieces such as body panels and not the frame. Sorry my electrical knowledge is a little lacking. As long as its anything metal am I cool?

Thanks for any and all help!

I've used the negative terminal on the battery itself several times with no problems.

So just do red to red, and black to black then? Should be fine?

Yea. Connect red first, black last.

The only real problem with useing the neg. post on the batt. while jumping it is that the gas given off by the charging batt. could explode from the spark from removing the clamp on the neg. post.

Thanks guys...worked perfectly. Only issue now is, prior whenever I started the car, the CHECK warning would flash but a simple tap on the brakes would cancel it. Now it flashed the whole time while I took the car for a spin after starting it. Maybe I'll go out and start it again in a little bit and see if it's the same.

              Any ideas?

Always wear safety glasses while jumping a car to prevent said explosion going into your eyes. If it exploded you might still get battery acid in your eyes. In that case plain water will neutralize the effects of the acid. So flush your eyes with water. Finding a good ground other then the battery terminal far away from the battery is the safest option. There is todays safety tip. The more you know.

Has anyone here really had the battery explode on them? I've never heard of anyone having that happen to them.

if you have the proper battery for your E30, the gas from the battery is vented through a tube outside the trunk anyway.

It happens more often than you would think. Never seen it tho.

material covered in this thread has been informative to me.

over the years, i'd realize there was a 'procedure' for hooking cables up -

but would then just be like: "fuck it. They're goin' straight on the terminals."

What can cause "unfortunate hardships to brain boxes" ?

                          Just find another ground...:D

I don't think it would ever do that but wow would that scare the shit out of me if that ever happened in my trunk.

I have always done black to black, red to red.

I have seen it twice in the last two years. Someone will come in saying they tried to start their car and heard a loud boom, and now it won't start. The seal around the top cap and the square bottom casing is where they blow out.

My uncle was in the hospital because of that, he got the wires backward and the batt exploded, the acid (hot) bathed his head and face, damadged his eyes, and he breathed the vapours, all the car paint was ruined (inside the engine compartment and on the roof, fenders and one door).

He recovered fully, but ws blind for more than one month.

Lead acid batts are dangerous if you make mistakes, plus, the acid is extremely flammable.

ALWAYS Unhook the negative wire AFTER shutting off the "donor" car.
