    Shop owners and workers.

What would be the cost of replacing the two rear wheel bearings in an e30? I am not looking to get a deal, I just want to know. Be honest, what would you charge the everyday Joe?

Yeah.. I had one of my bearings done. My mechanic is a very fair guy and $300 is what he charged me for parts and labor.

3.8 hours of labor + parts. We charge $80/hr and the dealer around here is $100/hr. So already you're looking at $300 in labor. Then parts would be AROUND $80 ea. So about $460 total parts and labor for both. Thats what the every day customer quote would be around +/- a little bit.

i have to do this very soon. what exactly is involved, b/c it was my understanding that you have to buy the whole axel and hub assembly as one piece, so it seems like a pretty straght forward job.

IIRC front hubs and bearings are seperate units, rear it's all in one piece .

I picked up both bearings (genuine) for about $35 each. I've been sitting on them a while cause I don't want to fork out the cash in labor, and I heard that they're a bitch to do yourself. Anyone know of a good DIY write-up for rear bearing replacement?

i warn yout hough, it sounds easier then it is. the bearing is damn near impossible to get out without a bearing press. i couldnt get mine out and ended up messing up the splines and the axle would slide back into place. had to tow it to a shop and pay to get it done. that and wasting 20+ hours trying to do it myself with alot of frustartion and down time.

Wow, I guess $48 an hour for labor is a damn good price. Bimmerhaus in da haus!

Yea, we charge 70 an hour and it can take anywhere from 2-4 hours for two wheel bearing, just depends on how hard it is to get the old one out.

Its the other way around, the fronts are a hub assembaly, the rear bearings are just pushed out.

They are easy to do with the right tools.

It's $300ish each at my shop. Thats with OEM brand bearing. The left side is slightly more difficult than the right, so don't be surprised if that one is a little more expensive than the other.
