Do you need a spring compresser to install the H&R Cup K
Do you need a spring compresser to install the H&R Cup K
Or do you just directly swap the assemblies? The reason I'm asking this is because I have to install these in my garage instead of my usual shop, so I'm working with limited tools.
You don't need a spring compressor to get the new spring on, but you should use one to take the old spring off. Although, last time I installed a Cup Kit on an E36 all I did was loosen the top bolt and let the spring shoot off the strut so I didn't have to a rent a compressor.
The new spring is short enough not to need one though.

I'm confused. Ive never actually done any suspension work, but ive seen theinstallation of GC Coil Over onto an integras stock shocks, and you had to compress the spring to take it off the shock. But since I'm getting the H&R Cup KIt, dont the springs already come installed on the shocks? So cant I just remove the whole stock assembly and replace it with the CK? If I do need a spring compresser, wheres the best place to rent them?
No. You have to re-use your strut housings. That means you have to put the shock insert inside the housing and then put the spring on.
The silver part (left) is a painted strut housing. That is not included in the kit.

That picture is of an E36 318/325 Cup Kit. non-M E36's use a single piece strut housing/strut tube combo. I see your point though.
I never waste time with spring compressors when taking the spring out. Installing new springs is a different story--if the spring is short enough, you won't need em. If it's too long, you'll need to compress them.
PM Rob, he put a Cup Kit on his car, so he'll know if you need compressors or not.
You have a shop and you've never done suspension work? Interesting.
