PLease Help for an M3

This is not an E30, but maybe...

A friend owns a 1997 M3 - he blew a resistor, then he replaced it with the original dealer part and after 2 or 3 miles his alternator took a dump, the car is waiting for the new alternator and resistor, we'd like to know if someone knows about this as a common issue with the car or it's just casual that both things fried themselves. The new alternator cost about 1.000 US$ here and he would not like to buy another one.

very common and a very easy fix, I have done it in two of my E36's. It takes all of 10 min if you are slow. I dont know why the alternator fryed, dont think it has anything to do with the resistor.

BTW after researching a bit on the resistor, found lots of DIY on how to replace it and that it's a common problem, but we were really concerned about the resistor having to do with the alternator blowing.
