From what I understand, everyday driving is rough and nowhere close to a smooth five speed auto. I've also heard that some people have actually stalled it out going through drive throughs and such.

On the track or a fun twisty road however, nothing beats it and it makes less skilled drivers look better than they are. You don't have to put as much brain power into downshifting properly, timing it correctly, and it will shift so much faster than you possibly can unless your last name is Schuck. It also keeps the clutch pristine.

      e36 M3 > e30 M3 > e46 M3

Flog and e36 M3 with some power... then drive the e46 and say it is awesome :)

my specific complaints about SMG arent really that bad. Taking off from a hill or on an incline takes some getting used to. In an auto, you virtually have no roll-back. In an SMG you have to be quick to go from brake to gas, and if you have sensitivity all the way up and in sport mode, it likes to jerk on ya. My friend(who owns the m3) put it best: If you are just driving for enjoyment, and not a "hard core racer" the SMG is fine. you can still put it in "D" and just go. My other complaint is how it downshifts. Its nice that it will rev-match for you, but I am one who likes to control that kind of thing.

SMG isn't for everyone. A lot of people like it, cause it makes driving a stick easy, but for someone who has always driven a manual, its hard adjusting to.

I say go drive a few different cars with SMG and without, and see if you can drive them for extended periods of time(over night or so) to really get a feel for it.
