    Weight? LBs= Horsepower?!

    Hey me and my friends have been arguing over this nonsense for alittle while now.

    1. Is 100lbs of weight = to 10 horsepower in identical cars?

    2. If your car has 10 horses per 100 lbs will it run 13s? Like an E46 M3.

      ive herd taht for every 10 lbs u loose its about the equivlant of gaining 1 hp.

          weight/hp is not a linear scale. it is very difficult to have an *accurate* measure, most of the "10hp=100lbs" type comments are rough estimates. And without knowing specific power output, weights, tire sizes, wheel weights, gearing, track conditions, etc etc you can't really accurately estimate those things

          easy way: test n tune at your local drag strip

              what rob said... there's alot of variables. i guess that 10=100 theory is just kinda like a general rule of thumb estimate, give or take a few hp

                          Yeah, considering a stock 318iS weights 2600lb w/134hp, I'd say 1hp = 10lb is a really bad estimate...

                                  318is has a Lb-hp rating of 19.42lbs/HP
                                  325is 16.73 lbs/hp
                                  M3 14.23 lbs/hp
                                  E46 M3 10.26 lbs/hp

                                      He means taking off 10 lbs. would be like gaining 1 horsepower.

                                          there are other factors other than just weight. Add a 4.10 lsd to a 325is and youll beat and e30m3, without changing the power to weight ratios at all

                                                          Also, if you lose weight in wheels and tires, there is more of a gain than an equivelant loss of "sprung" weight.
