    Radar detector question.

In a recent trip to VIR, bane of camaros, I noticed the sign that read that radar detectors are illegal in Virginia, and that they should be turned off immideately. I don't actually have a radar detector, but I was wondering if they had some kind of technology to..well..detect your detector? Anybody?

Technically its illegal to even posess one in VA regardless of whether its in your car or on still new in the box. Turning it on or off makes no difference. A VA state police officer said that the only thing you can do is pull over, remove the detector and put it in your trunk and you might get away with posessing it because the cops can't search your trunk without a warrant or probable cause. And even if that was the case, they probably wouldnt charge you with illegal posession of a radar detector because putting it in the trunk indicates that you had not planned on using it while in the state.

As for being detected, they have the technology in VA. That's why newer radar detectors have advanced stealth mode.

Going back some years, it started out with radar.
Then they made the radar detector
Then they made the radar detector-detector technology which detected radar detectors.
Then they came out with a radar detector that detected this technology.
But then the police eventually got the technology that can detect this method of being detected.

Essentially they will know that you have a radar detector before they know how fast you are going.

Yup they do. Radar detectors detect radar, now radar can detect radar detectors, but to counteract this radar detector detecting, radar detectors now detect radar datector detectors. I made it as simple as I could ;)

I wouldn't risk it. I lived in VA. My dad went so far as to hide the detector in the basement. We only pulled it out when we visited the folks in Montana.

Turn it off and hide it while in VA. Don't even think about it. They are WATCHING you!!

Someone in VA bolt a radar detector to the bottom of your car and turn it on. Drive around legally and have fun with that. :D

Commonwealth states are usually tight-ass when it comes to their laws. Its even illegal to spit on the sidewalk. And don't get into a domestic dispute with a woman. Even if she kicks YOUR ass and the cops come, you are going to jail.. or at least you better be on the ground crying like a sniveling little bitch if you want the police to do otherwise. Oh.. and in Virginia they practice police brutality.. even on the white folks. Your neck could be as red as a dozen roses. The officer will still call you "boooooy".

Hm..That wouldn't do well for me then. I think I'd attack him if he called me boy :P. That sucks. Thank god the police in NC are usually stereotypical nobraineres.

Yeah, the cops weren't that bad in my end of VA, near tennessee, and they don't call you "boy" at all. They can be douchebags about traffic stuff *cough*70ina65*cough* but things are totally different in NOVA and in the Piedmont area.

I lived in Richmond for most of my life, and never had a serious problem with the cops. Most of them now are ex-Marines and in their mid to late twenties. Apparently, there was a problem with the veteran cops being racially prejudiced, and they're trying to clean up internally. Well, that's what I've heard.

I knew a dude that had a radar detector retrofitted into the engine bay somewheres, with only a couple small LED's in the existing instrument panel. But frankly, I think it's ridiculous that they are actually legal here in CA. I mean, aren't we just wasting tax dollars on cops and their radars? Everyone drives at least 80mph everywhere, as opposed to VA where they actually enforce the law.

I say raise the speed limits on major highways, but STRICTLY enforce it. 1mph over 80 = hefty fine. Don't get me wrong, I like to drive fast sometimes. But it's like some stupid game the way it is now.

Thats pretty hard to enforce since most speedometers are not properly synchronized to wheel speed and that radar has like a 3mph margin of error on it.

^^ True. Not to mention all of the weirdos out there running retardedly large "dubs" that HAVE to throw off their speedometers..
