Then the animal rights people came back and said that making fun of animals and mocking them in that way is cruelty towards animals also. Something about it hurting their feelings or something like that.

Its just that on Defenders there is nothing to go wrong, get a basic Disco with a manual gearbox and clothseats, like they were supposed to be and you'll come out with a great piece of gear. Quite simiply any Land Rover is like a bad woman, you know its wrong but you just can't help going back for more. Haha Yes this is coming from a Land Rover owner

If you say so. I spent some time on disco.org trying to figure out why there were so many Disco owners coming over to a Toyota Landcuiser site I'm on and bagging on Cruisers. After some reading on disco's site it looked like penis envy, because so many guys were jumping ship for a Cruiser with lockers, or a Defender 90 or 110, depending on what they needed for seating.

Nobody ever once brought up a single Defender issue. So if you want to claim they suck, fine. But it's pretty normal for people to bring up all the issues they have with a certain model, and nobody was bagging on the Defenders from what I saw. I'm not a fan of British Imperial and I have a Cruiser, so I have no need to go any further in the Defender market anyhow.

Anyhow, my point was that lots of companies can turn out a stellar vehicle, and in the same model year they make a total lemon.

If you want to stay German, look at the service incident rates for VW Corrados vs. Jetta GLI's - both were made in Germany, but the Corrado was horrid for reliability with the G60 - it took the aftermarket rebuilding the charger and pro-active service to make them remotely reliable. The 2.0 16v motor was a champ as long as you kept the timing belt in top shape and had the tranny circlip updated so you didn't send the shaft out the case.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

I think every marquee has its issues, I mean my girlfriends' 2007 GLI with 100 miles on it has been to the dealership 3 times already, all for stupid crap. I don't think I would buy a VW based on her experiences already, but I know E46's have had all their share of issues and I bet the E90 is showing its weaknesses already as well.

Those commercials certainly make me laugh, but I don't think they are swaying anybody's decisions. What the commercials are doing are reducing cognitive dissonance for those that would willingly buy a Hyundai anyways; it makes them feel that much better about their purchase when their Korean pile is compared to a "Beemer." It's just like all other luxury items in life, we all know that American Eagle is a substitute for Lacoste, but how many people that like and can afford Lacoste wear American Eagle instead, because its similar & cheaper? There are people out there that do, but just because the opportunity exists doesn't mean everyone automatically jumps ship.

          RISING EDGE

Let's drive fast and have fun.

I think this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. It's ok for BMW to be arrogant and release all of those ads, touting that it's the "Ultimate Driving Machine" but when other car manufacturers do this it suddenly becomes wrong.

The claims that these other manufacturers are making are true and cannot be refuted. Albeit they are only talking about things such as cargo room, acceleration, and price point. These are valid factors that people consider when buying a car. Why does this get your panties in a bunch? Maybe you're just insecure about your purchase.

People have become so brainwashed and always try to play the badge card, but last time I checked BMW isn't perfect. There have been so many issues with them over the years. e46 m3 engine failure anyone?

My family owned a sonata, and it was the most reliable car we ever had... even more so than our Accord. Was it cheap and reliable? Yes. Was it fun to drive? No. The point is, every car has it's upsides and downsides and your car isn't going to be the best at everything, so get over yourself.

BMW has made some pretty bold statements recently to the tune of "Audi is no real threat" Remember the titanic? There is no such thing as an unsinkable ship.

several of the claims are true, ok, but let's get things into perspective here, we are all driving 20 year old cars, please let me know if you see a japanese, korean, or Malasyan 20 year old car driving around.

I bought my E30 with everything original, the previous owner NEVER fixed anything in the car, I fixed it, it runs great, it's solid, and has 395.000 kilometeres on the odo, it passes emissions and does not burn oil.

When someone can produce a 20 year old asian product running great, let me know so i can change my mind.

My statement includes Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, etc.

Of course things have to be fixed, but a friend of mine has an 87 civic and he can't find a solid body shell to replace his rusted out one.

                            just my

Right, a lot of people talk about reliability and compare a new car with a 20 year old car, but I'll take reliabikity on the long run, I have seen lots of abused 1970 darts or chevys, but Datsuns, never :p
