Being said get snow tires. Seriously it makes a world of difference on any car. With true snow rubber on bottlecaps I could outdo FWD cars in almost every category, especailly steering and braking where it really counts. Seriously, I could plow streets, I have video to prove it. 8)

i drove on z rated tires all winter in my iX didnt have a problem at all, and you can take any other car off at the live with awd in the snow its funny when u beat a huge 4x4 truck who thinks hes unstopable
yup can drive like there is no snow on the ground in the ix no matter how much there is, passing people in thier pos american fwd cars getting flicked off and flashing there brights, hey Ryan, I got pulled over in PV, ks for doing only what an ix can in the snow, the officer told me there is no reason to be driving a rwd car like I was in the snow, wasn't even speeding, just scared him with the mad grip around turns, its just fun, I drive around all night on unplowed streets, just trying to make the ix scare me, but it never does. But personally I think that the Audi's have BMW beat on the awd, but Audi's are also fall apart after 150k at least with the three I ahve owned.
it's not "average", it does great! snow tires are highly reccomended though, it will improve bad weather performance by quite a bit.
I know there's a lot of AWD naysayers, but we had a two week snowstorm this winter (yeah no biggie for you east coasters, but around here two weeks of constant snowing is a friggn' blizzard, I5 was closed partialy in much of the NTW). I and my buddy both have Yokohama AVS ES 100s on our cars.
Let me tell you, these are NOT snow tires!! He couldn't even move his car (318is), I had no trouble going (or turning), but stopping on summer only tires on a sheet of ice is not fun nor easy! I got lucky at one intersection and the light turned green before I rearended somebody :P There wasn't really anyone I couldn't keep up with (except for one nut doing over 60 on a half frozen and compacted slush), it was stopping that sucked. Basically, since no wheels had any amount of traction, when I hit the brakes the ABS pretty much cancelled all the braking force I was putting on the car. I was still able to steer, but I got caught by suprize, being used to much shorter stoping distances! I'm mostly blaming the ABS, it's probably better with snow tires, but I could probably stop better without it at all :(
regardless of the tires, the car was a blast in the snow. doing 360s in the parking lot after work was worth doing :P I also had no trouble getting to work, as long as I gave myself ample time for stopping. In fact, I discovered that the car became mostly RWD in the snow, with the front being relatively neutral unless the rears started spinning. oh and of course 4 wheel drifts are always fun, as is spinning all for tires at 40mph :P
Naturally, winter tires are highly reccomended on ANY car in the snow. but trust me guys, an ix would waste any e or i car in the snow, unless you're talking about professional ice racers or something :P
sorry for the novel, but that's my version of the ix in snow and I'm sticking to it! :)
Just to reiterate what everyone is saying; yes, ix''s are great in the snow. Last winter I drove our 325ix through probably 10" of snow without any problems. This was on the stock all-seasons. The car would be unbelievable with snow tires.
