and if they total it you will have to buy the car back from the insurance company as well. Once they cut you the check the car becomes theirs

      Yeah I know. I've had a 2002 totalled by a drunk driver.

Agreed with those who say it's totalled. It doesnt' take much at all to total an E30 these days- most insurance companies will value the car at $1000-1500, and it won't take much in the way of full-retail OEM sheet metal and $80/hour bodywork labor to total it.

As for the Salvage title question, it will depend mostly on your state's regulations. You cannot simply ask the insurance company to not put a salvage stamp on the title, there are laws about when it must be branded a salvage car. But, unless it's a super-rare or highly valuable car, it really does not matter. It's not really gonna hurt the resale value to have a salvage title- maybe a couple of hundred $$$, but like I said- there's not much you can do to avoid it IF the car is fixed.

I'd say yes, and Texas has a 60% rule, I believe. Damage has to be over a given percentage of the value of the car before it can be totaled. What year/model is the car in question?

                        word..

On the great freeways around here where everyone is going 80 then all of a sudden stop completely, I always watch the back cause I can probably stop in a shorter distance than them.

Exactly. Unless I'm following a sporty car (good brakes), I can guarantee I can stop faster then the person in front of me, but who knows if the person behind me can stop as fast as I can.

Even if you buy it back and part it out, you will make out much better. My insurance company told me that the retail value of my car is $2750 and the salvage value is $300. I figure that I would GLADY take a check for $2400 to keep my car. A severe side or rear impact would probably leave me with enough good parts left over to make over $1200.
