Warning: Some Friendly Preventative Maintenance

Check your lug bolts. Last night three of my four lug bolts were loose. really loose. Could have been a bad day had i not checked.

Just wanted to pass on this advice, regardless of if you need to hear it or not.

Wow... were you the last one to install the wheel? If not, go back to the tire store and bitch about it. I hate when people don't do stuff right, especially stuff like that.

In the past when I've had new tires put on the car, I've taken a moment to personally check the lugs myself with the factory lug wrench in the trunk - in plain site of the guys who did the work too. I don't care what they think, I want to ensure my hardware is staying put. Also, its a good habit to get into when you're at a track event. Always check 'em before you set out for each run.

Even the local sears tire guy told me to check the nuts after a couple days, and if I didn't want to do it, they would for free. This warning was printed on the invoice too.

Mine suddenly came loose when I was driving one. I was only going about 30 at the time, but had I been going faster it could have been much worse.

It seems like lugs come loose only in circumstances where the individual tightens them randomly or in a circular pattern in lieu of doing them in the star pattern. Every instance that I have seen this happen was when the individual had no idea as to what the fundamentals were such starting with the top lug first or making them "snug" tight and then gradually making each one tighter.

I can't say for sure if properly tightening the lugs can prevent them from coming loose in all instances, however, its been my experience that loose lugs only occur from not getting them on right the first time.

This happend to a friend of mine and he was 20 minutes on his way to P.I.R. from Oly. I had to take him a socket and tighten his nuts on the side of the freeway with everyone that drove by watching.
