I have that jack, the same one backtrail has, from Costco. It kicks ASS. And it's easy to let the car down nice and slow. I fucking love that jack.

Right... so I'm supposed to spend in the range of $400 for a full set of jackstands based on the assumption that the "cheap" jackstands everyone and their grandfather have been using for the last 30 years MIGHT fail and drop a car down on me? Sorry, but I'm not falling for that one. If you're going to live your life based upon that kind of reasoning, you'd better be prepared to spend one hell of a lot more money on the things you use everyday than you currently are. In that case, you'd better go out and buy an H1 Hummer, because that cheap BMW you're driving might just kill you if that cheap civilian steel and sheet metal fails.

Sorry if I sound like an ass, but that kind of logic just drives me nuts. You don't have to spend ridiculous amounts of money on the most high-tech products to be safe while working on your car.

Bullshit, fuck that, I prefer to stay safe and not drive at all. I feel I am safest in my 6 point harness/rollcage setup I have at my computer desk.

In all seriousness, I'd love to have those snap on or ac hydraulic setups, but am by no means concerned about being smashed by my current jackstands.

I bought these a few months back and they kick ass. Super sturdy and have welded on pads on the bottom (like the ones Ben linked). I bought the pads too, but not really necessary.

I have my walmart jack and jackstands that I have used for the past like 4 years... If I want it to go higher, I use some bricks that I have lying around jack up the car on the jackstands first, then lay the bricks down and jack it up again. This method hasn't failed me yet and eventually I would love to splurge on a nice jack. Unfortunately, college funds do not afford such a luxury. lol

To OP....I'd suggest wood (i use scrap pressure treated 4x8) but 2x4's would do. Seems to me wood would compress better before failing, and that a brick might just shatter.

I have these stands too! They have a nice flat-ish saddle that with the urethane pads, won't mar the front floor rail when you set the car down on them.

They are a nice alternative to paying out of the yin yang for some AC Hydraulic-brand stands.

Whatever you feel safe under is what's best for you. When I'm under a car - I have it on 4 jack stands and I leave the jack under each side too. Better safe than sorry.

i use 10 OEM jack stands stacked on top of each other to lift my car. its like my lift. i just gotta make sure i dont bump it, or it will fall.

thats a great idea, i will be sure to hunt the local yards and collect as many as i can! Did you think of using some 1 by to spread the load under the car? I bet i could make a drive on lift with some 1 by an elmers glue
