If you're living under their roof, and they are footing the bill for any portion of your rent, utilities, meals, etc...then they can pretty much call the shots.

    Don't like it?

    Move out on your own.

Until then, you're playing under their rules.

    Sucks, doesn't it?

But again, if you don't like it, then go out on your own, pay your own rent, food, utilities, etc...

Maybe your parents are actually doing you a favor and are trying to teach you a valuable life-lesson about real-life priorities.

When I had my BMW in high school - I did what I wanted with it. I used my own money I earned. I do not understand any logic in any of it.

dam beat to the punch! several times over!
move out pay for your own living expences, then save every extra $ to make the mods to the car (you wont have much!). that'll show them!
or you could save your $, then mod your car when you move out.

Agreed. If your parents are supporting you, you can't bitch.

Mod their car and then tell em you don't owe any rent for awhile.

I'm with everyone else in that if you are living under their roof, you should respect their rules.

I guess my parents are different though. They love sports cars. My brothers lowered E36 M3 is the best thing that has happened to the family since the Maserati in the 80's.

I'm a parent, my son is 19, why would i not let him buy springs if i already let him swap an engine ???

I don't get it, it's not that a set of springs is going to be that big a deal moneywise, in the end, that is the correct thing to do, you don't just dump horsepower in a car and leave stock suspension and brakes, it's smart to upgrade suspension, steering and brakes.

I would be shocked if my son upgraded an engine and didn't say "I need better brakes and suspension".

Well, I talked it out with them kind of, My dad was a mechanic for 30 years so he understands, my mom just thought I was planning to spend tons. I'm just seeking advise. Basically what happened is that I picked up the motor with my dad and my mom was just skeptical evidently. Thanks to those who helped me out.

although your parents may know what they are talking about on changing alot more parts when you do the suspension ?? !! Because if it has any age and wear on it you will probably have to change control arms, bushing, tie rods, sway bar links since they are most likely worn the hell out anyways. But once it is done even if you lower it and use sport struts and shocks you will be golden for quite sometime with no suspension issues at all.

With the extra weight, your gonna need new suspension if your current stuff is warn. I'd say that it is a safety issue as well.

Good point! In addition to sharing that I would also say that its reasons like this that you have to get your own place. It does not matter whether or not what they say makes sense or not. Even if you paid your own way for everything, its still their house and they still make the decisions. That is the reality of adulthood. You cannot live under someone else's roof and be their "equal".

Granted you put the bigger engine in the car and now it needs brakes and suspension in order for it to be safer but for right now, just don't drive the car so fast. Drive slow and carefully until you can afford to get your own place. Once you have your own life completely separate from their household, I am sure that your parents won't mind you bringing the car over to work on it and they won't have anything to say about it.

Yeah, I won with this, that and the bushings are really cheap for e30's so its not even that big of deal.
