Well I left high school my junior year, got a GED, and now I have a very nice job in the IT Field as a Desktop Support Administrator/Windows Server Admin

It was not easy though, if I would had done it over again I may had gone to college instead..

What does he do for a living?

50 grand sounds nice when you are in high school, but you have to look at the earning potential. Is he going to be earning 50 grand the rest of his life (which isn't that impressive)? Also how secure is his job? How long will he physically be able to do this job?

Jonathan, I think he does real estate. Earning potential can be high. But I dunno. It's likely the one that made it, while there's plently of agents where I am working right now who aren't doing so hot.

I agree $50K is chump change, even in Indianapolis with low cost of living. In California, that'd probably be poverty level. :? Teachers make that much here.

College opens the doors for high paying careers. (Sorry for folks who haven't been hired yet: Brandon and others....) But yeah, there are a lot of opportunities and potential with college.

$50,000 is definately baller, baller for a kid, but try raising a family on that, and buying a house, and etc. etc.

Education is a good investment. Hands down.

Z3J, you go to Purdue right? I don't know if you ever said it outright, but you've mentioned their program a lot.

            James, Bill, and others: Congrats!

RandomTask: How long will you be in a wheelchair for?

            My thoughts:

HS was alright. I had some fun but sure wish I was more active in school stuff. At the time I was too caught up in my other ventures.

College again is alright. I'm not learning anything from my classes but I'm learning lots from the experience. The only reason I can stand college is because I live off campus by myself. If I had to live in a dorm where people are drinking, yelling, pissing, shitting, stinking, and fucking nasty girls raw until 4AM, I'd lose my mind.

Truth be told, I've been wanting to get out in the real world since I was 5 years old.

I really don't think making a living and dealing with total responsibility is all that bad.

No joke. My neighbor was in a wreck in his e30 which didn't even look half as bad as yours and he died in the wreck.

Huh? From my experience (and a good chunk of my friends are CS, CIS, techy kind of majors), you're lucky to make $50k+ out of school, and most of that is up in the more expensive to live Northern VA area. I'd be thrilled to get that. Most non-tech people are far under that (yet can still live comfortably).

It's interesting to see all the different perceptions of college. Yeah Fred, there were many a 3:00 papers and programs, but there were many more 3:00 hanging out with friends sessions, which is the hardest thing to say goodbye to.

50k starting pay here in Tn is good, I'll be making 45k starting out when I'm finished with school in a year(if I go with a Job at TVA) and then if I stay with that job it tops out at close to 60k. My mom was a teacher and they make about 36k a year here in TN.

Bill, I was referring to in the long run, $50K isn't a whole lot. Down the road, with kids, house, etc., what seems great when he's a kid won't be as amazing.

$50-60K is a good starting salary, but without room for improvement, the joy fades.

If he was self made, it would be much better. But I guess when he grows up, he can follow in daddy's footsteps and make at least $300,000 if not much more.

There's a few people I know who are inheriting family businesses, I'm jealous.
