    135I the new e30?

just wondering what everyones thoughts where on the new 135i.

seems like bmw may be going back to their roots with a lighter car with better power to weight.
the article says its going to be at least 200 pounds less than a 3 series but im hoping for at least 3-400 pounds ;).
either way ill be one of the first to pic one up

No, it will still be well over 3000 pounds. Will be as close as BWM can get with all the constraints they have now.

i think they are trying to bring it back to where the 2002 was, the 3 series has grown in size with every revision and without the 318 or the 320 theres room in the entry-level market for a cheeper smaller car. the 128 should start around 26 grand. i think its a good idea because the 3 is getting a little too big and even though the 335i is total hotness alot of people would like a smaller cheeper car

lighter yes, better power to weight ratio of course not y would you even suggest that? :loco:
i was speaking in general, but thanks for your imput .

gobuffs thats my thoughts exactly, with all the US safety regulations and constraints most car manufacturers have their hands tied to a certain degree.
unless you can get a waiver like lotus did with the Elise.
still i like that bmw is trying :)

BMW 1 Series: Back to Basics
            Source: AutoWeek.com

Death Valley, Calif. -- BMW wants the upcoming 1 series to lure enthusiasts back into the fold. The automaker identifies this group as former BMW owners who abandoned the brand because the 3 series got too big and too luxurious over the past 20 years. "There are people who always loved BMW but, to be honest, loved some of the older stuff more because, for them, it was smaller, more compact, more pure," said Rich Brekus, general manager of product planning and strategy at BMW of North America LLC.

Brekus said a group of former 3-series owners who had cars in the 1980s and early 1990s fits this mind-set. "The series has grown up, but some of them did not necessarily want the 3 series to grow up," Brekus said during a BMW event here last month. For them, "the older BMWs were more youthful." He said the 1 series "is the purest BMW we have."

Although shorter than the 3 series, the 1 series shares some components with that model. When the 1 series goes on sale next year in the United States, it will be BMW's entry-level line. Brekus said ride and handling will not be sacrificed despite a price below the 3 series. The 1 series will feel and drive like a BMW, he said. The United States will get a 1-series two-door coupe; a convertible also is expected. BMW sells a 1-series five-door hatchback in Europe that went on sale in 2003, and it recently unveiled a three-door hatchback. BMW has said that neither hatchback will be sold here.
            That's exactly what they're saying.

I dunno though. For some reason I don't really like any cars made after 1994. The styling is way off for my taste these days. Yes, even BMWs.

from the article that i read that seems to be the idea and a step in the right direction.
o and yes the 335i is total hotness, i was going to pic one up but when i heard the rumors of the 135i i put that on hold.

BMW lists the 135i coupe's unladen weight as 3439lbs. Significantly more than the e46 coupe, and only 132lbs shy of the portly 335i coupe's 3571 lbs.

A new e30 it is not.

The real benefit of the 135i, I suspect, will be the price. $7k-9k less than the 335i coupe perhaps?

Oh I know what you meant and thats also what I meant .
I was not comparing the E30 to anything ..just in general .

But the notion that the E30 is lightweight and has better power to weight than anything is still laughable .

And why not just post this is any one of the other dozen or so recent threads on the 135i ?

1 series is really ugly. very much more so than the 335i. but it is an attractive buy if you are considering a bimmer.
it will be slower than the 335i even though it is lighter and has the same engine.

me thinks the 135i engine will have different internals and be de-tuned. but an e30 it is not.

the 3 series has only grown up and out, not longer.

Lotus only got a waiver for the bumpers (and only then for 2 years).
