    safe to do this?

I left the key turned forward on my car while I was working on it so now my battery is dead. I have another style battery that I was going to use to start the car, disconnect it, and then while the car's running connect the dead battery so it will charge when I drive around. I won't fry myself as long as I disconnect the negative first, right?

Why don't you just use jumper cables? Isn't that a lot quicker?

It will work as the alternator should be able to run the car by itself but it all depends if you wanna risk getting fried or not. To be on the safe side go buy some damn jumper cables you cheap arse then you wont have to worry about it again

Don't do that, it will cause a voltage spike which could fry your voltage regulator and other modules in your car. Do not EVER disconnect the battery with the engine running in a newer car.

push start it. It should be easy as long as you have at least a little battery left.

Pushstarting it actually works quite well. Get a couple people to push, fifth gear, drop clutch, have key over in ignition, and it roars to life. Just release the clutch right away!

                      ^Yes, as a matter of fact I have. :)

Bump start FTW, I bought a (cheap) car that was a non starter, had a battery cable fuse popped, I bump started it and drove it to the store to buy a fuse. I felt a little bad, but hey.

on the subject of jumper cables, don't skimp there. Get a nice $30 set of nice thick gauge, with heavy duty sprung jaws.

                        seriously.

In theory it will work and you will not fry yourself. I have done this on other cars that I have owned and never had a problem. The only thing that I don't know is whether or not you will fry your computer. BMW electronics are somewhat "fragile" and if you do something that is seemingly harmless, that could be the one thing that creates an electrical gremelin in your car.

I had an incident where the fuse kept blowing on my right side tail light and before I was able to troubleshoot the problem, I decided to just simply jump a wire from the left tail light over to the right tail light. After that I had nothing but problems with the car starting and running. Once I was able to find a new computer, the problems went away. Could this have been a coincidence? Maybe but I heard a similar story on bimmerfourms where a guy said that he did the same thing with his dashboard lights and then had computer problems.

Must have been a blast..... lol

Hell, it could be started on your own - as long as you had a slight hill, and a nice running start - you could jump in and get er' started! LOL
