    RAM question

I'm going to buy some pc133 512mb memory for my computer. I can either buy "generic" memory for $55, or name brand Kensignton for over $100...is memory just memory or will I regret saving the money?

i built my computer about 2 years ago and got mine from crucial.com and i have been very happy with it. at first we ordered the wrong kind and they exchanged it and refunded the difference money all no problem. great customer service and a great product.

kensignton isn't exactly what I'd call quality brand name stuff.. what motherboard/chipset do you have? you might be okay with the generic stuff, PC133 isn't exactly cutting edge these days anyway. it all depends on if the stuff is compatible with your motherboard.

Well it all depends on what you do with your computer. If you just want more ram, get the generic. pc-133 is really cheap lately. I'd say spend cheap because you arent getting much performance out of pc-133 anyway.
if you want to get your money's worth, upgrade to a ddr based board.

        DDR is the craze. heh

Go cheap, if you can't decide by yourself you won't know the difference. And by the way it's Kingston Technologies, and it IS high quality stuff. I've got my computer at home running Crucial Ram and mine here at school with Kingston (DDR of coarse). If anything i'd say jump on the DDR bandwagon, SDRAM is way old school.

Regardless of what people say, take it from a guy who builds computers. Go with the best memory you can get with the money you have. The results will be a system that freezes less, overall performs better, and is more reliable.

You won't regret fronting the extra cash when your friends who bought the cheap shit call you on the phone, telling you how they just lost their unsaved 20 page term paper because their computer froze.

              Do the right thing. 8)

Lol, its the family computer and its a couple years old. I don't really care because I get a brand new laptop for college, but it does need a memory upgrade because I can't even copy music onto my mp3 player and seach the internet without my computer going really slow (128mb ram currently). I really don't care too much about this computer (dell dimension 4300 at 1.6ghz P4) but some more memory would be nice. I think I'll shell out the extra dollars for the better memory. Thanks guys.

Goto www.crucial.com or www.mushkin.com. Kingston is better than generic, but far from high-quality.

                      EDIT:
If you are ADDING a 512 stick to an existing stick of RAM, find out what your existing stick of RAM is. If its crap quality, don't waste your money on better RAM, because your RAM is only as good as your weakest stick.

You have a P4 and the motherboard uses PC133 ram? Are you certain of this? Also, if you have a P4 1.6 and 128mb of ram and it's going 'really slow', then the ram probably isn't your problem. I'd try reformatting.

You basically erase everything off of your hard-drive and then reformat it and then reinstall windows. It'll make it run as well as it did the first day you bought it.
