    f#$&%$ my clearcoat

car was painted wednesday, thought it would be hard enough to put a soft blanket over fender while working on engine. No, when i took the towel off the clear had the fabric imprinted in it and had no shine, like it had been pressed down to the base coat. am i pooched or can this be fixed? help please

I cant believe the clear is still soft! I'd try to wet sand it with 2500 grit and buff it out, otherwise just have the screwed up panel respayed. Tell your painter to bake his paint jobs...geeez

You don't need to do anything. Drop the car back off at your bodyshop and ask them to repair that area. Easy to reclear one area and bill you for it.

once paint has curred since they did not bake the paint, you can wetsand and buff out but I highly recommend you not do it if you have no clue in what your doing. You can easily screw it up even once curred and if is that soft now forget it. You will just makes things alot worse

even if it didnt get baked it should still be cured if it was painted on wednesday! must have used really cheap clear or not enough hardener. Thats strange.

I think you ought to take it back to the shop, tell them what happened and ask them to fix it. I am sure that any reputable body shop would appriciate knowing that that their clearcoat is still soft after a week. Also I wouold suggest that they wouldn't mind fixing it being that they know what to do about it and they wouldn't want their work to be misrepresented by your attempted repair.

                            i will

I am going to take it back to them for sure. I would never attempt to fix it myself. I was just curious what it would take to fix it. i am hoping it wont need to be taken down and new color coat and clear put on. Is it possible for them to just shoot clear over such a small area to repair it? Its on the top of the passenger side front fender and its about 5" by 4". Holy shit I am mad at myself for putting the blanket over, this has been a 2 year project and a lot of hard earned cash and i go and fuck up my paint.

Dont be so hard on yourself over it as the shop should have baked the finish on where this would not have been a problem at all... They either did bake it but no where near long enough or they didn't bake it at all. It should be a fairly easy fix for them and might not even have to be reshot either....
