    clearcoat

ok, since i cant take the car back right away, would it be beneficial to get the car out of the garage and into the sun on nice days to try and get this clear to harden? so you guys dont think its totally fucked? It should be fixable without a total car respray?

First off... just chillax a wee bit. Treat your car like normal until you talk to them. I am sure the shop will get you taken care of. Until then, you can't do anything about it anyhow. I know it's your baby and all, but try not to worry.

A fender blotch is an easy repair... you are not trying to match new paint to old paint so they won't have to do the whole car or anything. If they just reshoot the fender (if even needed) it will look great.

Don't worry, don't get worked up. Be cooool.

What he said ^^^^^ and just try not to lean on it or get to carried away if you were to wash it. If you can put it into the sun it surely will help some unless they did not get enough hardener in the clear/paint ?? I will bet that it is a base/clear paint job and with the care of the shop it will be a super easy fix for them. Worse case scenerio they will have to reshoot the fender but more likely can fix it with some colorsanding and buffing... just hang in there until after the holiday weekend when you can go see them everything will be just fine

The last three posts are exactly what you need to do.

So, you, young guy in a cheap old BMW has issues with the clear being crap. OK, fine, whatev...YOU are cool about this mistake and deal with it (and them) like a champ, understanding that you should certainly be able to throw a towel over their paint after a whole week without fear of damage.

Both of you have a clear understanding that the issue is theirs, someone somewhere screwed up...or they should have told you to not touch your car until 2008.

So now, REMEMBER that YOU are doing THEM a favor by letting them know that their work has BIG issues. Someone forgot the hardener or something...

            Closing SOON!

And for the record.... When you go talk with them about this issue DO NOT HAVE AN ATTITUDE ABOUT IT PERIOD !!!!! BE NICE !!!!! because they are more likely to have zero problem with fixing it unless you go in with an attitude about it. This also goes for anything in life too......

I had the same problem with the mtech spoiler when I had it painted. There were a ton of finger prints and things in it. I would drop it off and say you just noticed this under the light when you got home. You couldn't get to it until today and want it repaired. Worked for me.

And in the future, don't even think about touching your paint in any fashion whatsoever for at least 3 weeks after you get the car back. It takes that long for paint to completely harden.

Yeah, wrong. Cars can be taken apart, preped, painted, baked, put back together, wet sanded and buffed all in one day. I do it Monday- Friday.

This is a good policy to follow. It will get you far in many business transactions. There have been situations where I was COMPLETELY and obviously in the wrong, however, having a good attitude about it is what prompted them to accomodate me. So being that you are in the right, being nice and pleasant about it should get this problem solved.

And as others have said- Don't be so upset about it. It would be one thing if you did something stupid causing damage to the surface but you put a blanket over the fender. And its reasonable to think that you were protecting the surface.

                            thanks

thanks guys. i am a little better now after reading your posts. by the sounds of it no matter what it can be fixed. I wont touch the paint at all anymore. It is getting dusty, will the dust mess up the clear or will it just sit there for the 3 weeks and wash off when i do wash it. I also have a fingerprint that was left by someone at the shop, i think he said no worries about small scratches and stuff because a good buffing gets rid of a lot of imperfections. i was just freaking because to me this blanket spot looks so bad, but maybe i was just overreacting as i am not a painter.

BTW - Have them check the whole car, the mistake could be on all the body, not just the fender, if they did not use hardener, the clearcoat could be soft all over, thus they do have to respray the whole car.

                              Just a thought.
