So I went to the bodyshop today. (UPDATE PG. 2)

As many of you know I am far from entirely satisfied with the original respray done on my e30. I went down the the bodyshop today to work out a solution to the problems.

(list of problems is at end of post)

I talked to the manager who did infact remember me and my car well, which was helpful. He was actually very reasonable and I think we will be able to find a suitable middle grounds to meet concerning billing for the cars soon to be complete respray in the same color. He was quite willing to warrenty thier work to a point, point being basicly fixing, repainted, and blending the areas that are worked on. Blending isnt acceptable to me, so the entire car needs to be repainted.

Hopefully what I am looking at for a bill is.... full bill for the bodyparts I have added since they painted it. Partial bill for materials used to paint whole car (beyond that needed to do spot blending repairs)

I told them I need to have the car back and done by late June, hopefully around the 20th. That would give me 6 days to reassemble the car, and drive it up to the Pacific NW e30 picnic where (if I make it) my e30 will be a featured car 8)

I took this list of problems with me.

General notes of imperfections and flaws, concerning the body/paint work done on Jordan Sarette’s 1987 BMW 325iS by B&R Paint & Body shop.

Location: Over the entire painted surface of the vehicle.
Description: Note this is not referring to the texture “orange peel” in the clear coat. This is in reference to the texture in the base coat. It looks as if the spray gun “spraying chunks” of paint on the car. The base coat should be perfectly smooth in appearance. It is most certainly not.

Location: Drivers side door, key lock area.
Description: I had the key locks filled and shaved off. This involved gluing a square of metal on the inside of the hole on the door, and filling the outside of the hole flush with the doors surface. This bodywork is visible, and unacceptable.

Location: Passenger side door, key lock area.
Description: I had the key locks filled and shaved off. This involved gluing a square of metal on the inside of the hole on the door, and filling the outside of the hole flush with the doors surface. This bodywork is visible, and unacceptable.

    Location: Passenger side mirror.
Description: Primer is clearly visible as not enough base coats were sprayed to cover it.

    Location: Passenger side mirror.
Description: Paint was sprayed directly over existing rock chips on the mirror. Chips should have been sanded out or filled.

    Location: Drivers side mirror.
Description: Primer is clearly visible as not enough base coats were sprayed to cover it.

    Location: Passenger side rear c-pillar.
Description: Primer is clearly visible as not enough base coats were sprayed to cover it.

    Location: Drivers side rear c-pillar.
Description: Primer is clearly visible as not enough base coats were sprayed to cover it.

Location: Both sides of the vehicle, where the side moldings were.
Description: I had the side moldings on the car removed, then the recessed areas on the panels they sat on filled/shaved flush. The bodywork done to these areas shows, and is unacceptable.

    Location: All 4 wheel wells.
Description: Inside upper lip of all fenders did not receive paint, only overspray

    Location: Rear panel, between taillights.
Description: Area on the top of this panel, near the right license plate light never received paint. It was covered with masking tape.

Location: Drivers side rear quarter panel.
Description: Area was dented, it was not repaired to what I consider acceptable. Panel still wavy and uneven.

Location: Drivers side rear quarter panel.
Description: Area above the top most character line did not receive enough base coat. Primer is visable in several areas from the rear of the door, to the back of the rear side window.

Location: Drivers side rear quarter panel, tail lamp area.
Description: Area was built up with too much plastic filler. It sticks out way too far, and the tail light does not fit properly. Compare against the passenger side that is proper and then look at the driver side that is not proper.

Location: Drivers side rear quarter panel.
Description: Lower character line had left over filler on it that was not removed. The character line is as a result; sharp on the end towards the front of the car, and round near the rear (it should be rounded).

Location: Drivers side rear quarter panel.
Description: Mar in the finish, looks to be in the basecoat. Could be a “fisheye” or a place that was overlooked in sanding. I do not know. In-between the 2 character lines, and about 5in back of the door jam.

Location: Drivers side rear quarter panel.
Description: Upper character line was “burned through” during buffing. Area where paint was removed was masked off, and repainted. Masking lines are still clearly visible.

Location: Drivers side rear quarter panel.
Description: Lower front edge, paint was “burned through” during buffing. Area was never repainted.

    Location: Drivers side door.
Description: Front middle edge was “burned through” during buffing. Area was never repainted.

Location: Drivers side lower rocker panel.
Description: Primer is clearly visible as not enough base coats were sprayed to cover it. No longer a issue, as the side skirts completely cover this area.

    Location: Drivers side front fender.
Description: Run in the clear coat, just below lower character line.

    Location: Fuel door.
Description: Red paint (the doors original color) and primer is still clearly visible. Not enough primer was sprayed to cover the red paint, nor were there enough base coats to cover the red paint or primer.

Location: Passenger side rear quarter panel.
Description: Run in the clear coat, just below the lower character line.

    Location: Passenger side door jam.
Description: Primer is visible and paint is “dry” not enough base coats were sprayed to cover the primer, and not enough clear coat was sprayed to cover the base coats.

Location: Drivers side door jam, on door itself.
Description: Around latch area primer is visible, not enough base coats were sprayed to cover the primer.

Location: Drivers side door jam, on door itself.
Description: The doors original color (light silver) is visible as the paint lifted off with the masking tape.

Location: All 4 wheel wells, entire suspension.
Description: Overspray on the insides of all 4 wheel wells, and all over most of the suspension. Poor masking work. No longer such a concern as the ENTIRE suspension was removed, thrown away, and swapped for a entire suspension from a parts car.

    Location: Drivers side front fender.
Description: Panel was wet sanded, to prepare it to be buffed. Was never buffed. Panel is dull and appears to be sanded.

    Location: Front nose panel.
Description: Primer was visible to a horrid extend, and existing rock chips were painted directly over. Chips should have been sanded out or filled prior to painting panel. This panel doesn’t matter any more, as I replaced it with the updated style.

That really is some kind of list you have put together. As I, and many others have already stated, I can't wait to see the finished product.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for the original paint job?

The main thing that comes to mind is "you get what you pay for."

                        I paid $2,000.

I brought them a completely gutted shell of a car

They had very very very minimal labor to perform. Moreover, the entire time i stressed that if more money was needed then the original quote to do it right, that was NOT a problem. The manager insisted on staying true to his qoute.

I did most of the prep work, but any bodyshop is going to redo it all anyways else they wont warrenty their work.
