Is the 840 or 850 a decent car?

    Is the 840 or 850 a decent car?

    i know very little about them and my brother is dead set on buying one. Can anyone shed some light? My first instinct is moneypit....

    I don't know a whole lot about them... I love the way they look, though.

    I do remember hearing/reading that the v12 in the 850 is essentially two m20s, complete with separate DMEs for each bank.

      They should be as reliable as the E32 740 or 750 in reality, since they have all the same basic mechanical and electrical systems.

        VERY VERY expensive parts. I worked on a 840. STUPID prices. Upscale car so BMW inflates prices. Car was fast but rode like a cadillac. I prefer my 2002,325iX and 318is(e30) anyday.

          They are moneypits. This is why they are so damn cheap.

          The E32 740 and 750 are NOT cheap to properly maintain. The engine has to come out of an E32 750 for headgasket replacement, FYI...

          Just to give you an idea of how good a "packaging" job BMW did on the 8 series.

              Not directly related, but it's a good reference I think.

              They're money pits, especially if it's old or cheap. They were hundred thousand dollar cars new, and weren't reliable then, now that they're 3-4 owner cars, they aren't getting any better

                How expensive are we talking here? A comparison to e30 prices would be preferred.

                    I know at one time the plug wires/coil packs set for the 12cyl was like $1300 alone sooo. much much more than a e30 in parts I would assume

                        On a 750i, removing the engine to do the headgaskets is about a $6k job if I recall correctly.

                          Just get an Alfa

                          No, really... My first car (well, sorta) was an Alfa Milano 2.5 V6 and it was not only the most trouble free car I have ever had, I also kept it for the longest period of time (3 years). Italian motors + Bosch electronics FTW.

                            I had an 81 alfa romeo GTV6 as my first cas. wish I had kept it.

                            What would you guys reccomend instead of an 8? Lots of luxury and power required.
