Got to ride in a Lotus Exige

One of the cool things about High Performance Drivers Schools is that you never know, what some folks will bring to the track. This Monday and Tuesday I attended a track event at Watkins Glen that was organized by Tracquest. At this event some of the cars present were:

    Ferrari F355 Challenge
    Vintgage Lola 520
    Viper Competition Coupe
    993 Porsche Cup Cars
996 Porsche Cup Cars - raced in the Grand American Series
    560HP v8 powered 914
    Lotus Exige

Overall the Tracquest events are more much expensive than the typical BMWCCA event but for the money you can get up to 5-6 hours of track time (as a passenger and driver). I had almost 2hours of seat time as a passenger and 3 hours on my own.

When I got there I immediately noticed the Lotus and I made it a point to whore a ride at some point over the two days. As my luck would have it, a friend of mine also attending the event is friends with the owner. That evening over some beers and car talk, the Lotus's owner invited me for a ride the following day.

Turns out that the Lotus is a UK street legal, right hand drive production car.

The car is sex on wheels. Fast, loud, handles like a dream and sticks like snot in turns. The car does nothing wrong and it kills most p-cars at will. All on street suspension settings.

Sex on wheels - Lotus Exige

Yep this car is a production model over here in the UK and they can't fault it!!!!

A recent TV show did a test on a disused airfield where they played a little game... basically the Exige was on the run on this airfield from an apache helicopter, the helicopter was piloted by a top pilot and had to get missile lock-on to the exige... it failed!!!

You can see a video clip of it here

Isn't that just a US version of the Elise? I see them all the time at the track in Bitburg. My son wants me to get one.

The US version has the Toyota Celica GTS engine correct?

The US version is an Elise :)

The Exciege is a hardtop Elise essentiall with a sportier suspension. The Exciege and the US Elise have the same engine.

That thing is amazing. I watched the Top Gear video yesterday. Phenominal car in every respect. I can't wait to see those things here in the states. You know the die hard enthusiasts will gut them, tweak them, and have a nearly identical car that will be US road legal. Anyone have an idea on what the sticker price is going to be once they arrive?

This car is destined to be the budget supercar killer.
