    Best/worst idea ever?

I had an idea the other day regarding traction on an e30. Many times i've been stuck with an e30 that didn't have lsd/vc rear diff because one wheel lost traction.

That got me thinking of a low budget traction control device.

In case of emergency (ie: stuck in gravel, snow, steep bank):
Why not use the parking brake to lock the wheel without grip? All it takes is one deep 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the parking brake for the wheel with traction. Set the brake and in theory the wheel without traction will be stopped by the brake allowing the other wheel, with traction, to pull the car out. Only problem i could see with this scenario is that the p. brake will not have enough grip.

Once out of the situation, just torque down the nut you loosened and you are good to go..

I'll try this out next time i'm le stuck.

    Any input?

get some snow tires and don't worry about it, but that might work sometimes.

Get a cutter brake from a dune buggy, or two e-brakes.

so your gonna lay down in the snow to loosen a bolt instead of getting an lsd? They really don't cost that much...

I'd just get the lsd. good for a lot more than just stuck in the snow

I was talking about in case of emergency, you could lift your parking brake boot and loosen a bolt. but lifting the car up and quickly installing that correct ratio LSD you found locally for a fair price seems much more reasonable.

Doing that would kill the diff if you did it with any type of frequency, although I've seen people do it when in a pinch. Just be certain that you don't have an LSD, or you're going to have a bit of damage to deal with.

why would it kill the diff??? Even if it is and LSD and only one wheel is spining, you aren't doing anymore harm.

really if your in a e30 without snows you know your gonna get stuck someplace so you keep a kit with you

It wouldn't kill the diff unless you did it a lot. It would overheat the diff, thich is never good. If it is an LSD, it will destroy the clutch plates in short order by forcing them to slip. I guess it wouldn't be as bad in a open diff, which is where you would use it.

Rather than going through all of that, just find something on the side of the road that you can shove under the slipping wheel. Dirt, gravel, tree branches, etc. Unless you live in a clean and sterile outdoor enviornment, I am sure there is always something laying around that you can use.

                          I give up.
unbolt 1 bolt from inside the cabin or.... get out of the car to grab shit/get yourself dirty while trying to get grip.

also gearhead, seriously, i don't think you know where your own ass is.

Dosn't unbolting that one bolt loosen BOTH brakes?

Back when I had a truck, I was building a Prerunner out of it, it had an open diff in the rear (on a 2 wheel drive truck) and I would sometimes get stuck, but I was told that by just applying the ebrake it would help lock both wheels and you just have to give it more gas to overpower the ebrake but hopefully gets both wheels to turn.

In short just pull the ebrake anyways and gas the hell out of it. :)
