why does my steering wheel shake like crazy at 50mph

usually the shaking in the steering wheel comes from unbalanced wheels. If it gets worse when you brake, it could be a caliper or a tierodend or suspension pieces.
the easist place to start is to have your 2 front wheels balanced first. maybe you have a bent rim too.

I have a similar problem, though prehaps not as bad as yours. It happens at 60 and tapers off at 70. Not under breaking, just on the highway. I am replacing the control arms, tierods, and bushings and think that will fix it. Those parts should probably have worn out by now and should be replaced. The E39 5 series has a similar problem with their control arms.

I probably wont be installing things till next month, so I'll try to remember to inform on if the problem is fixed or not.

I had shaking and it went away after replacing my ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar stabilizers and bushings.
Can't say which was the cause but I would check it all and replace as needed. I think it cost me less than $150 to do all that
