    MAF fitted and tuned on dyno, charts inside.......

    Well I had my 328i Siemens MAF unit fitted and tuned yesterday. Results were as expected, 4-5 rwhp & rwtq gain and great throttle response. This confirms, in my mind, that the MAF hardly affects the power of an M20, but instead gives you great throttle response. The big gains people see are the ones associated with having your car properly tuned with a piggy-back unit.

    Charts below:

    Run 1 = when I only had my raw 3.0L stroker on an Alpina B3 chip
    Run2 = after Unichip piggyback fitted/tuned
    Run3 = after MAF installation

      Good stuff, thanks for sharing.

      So I guess it has been decided that a MAF conversion for the M20 doesn't yield much power, but works wonders for throttle response. I'm curious as to how this affects in gear acceleration, say a 2rd gear pull from 35-50mph.

        In terms of acceleration, I can only tell a slight difference....in 2nd gear I can sometimes reach 100kmph (60mph) with a good launch....but rarely as I usually have to shift up to 3rd at 98kmph.

        The response at the flick of the throttle and the very cool vacuum sound is very nice :)

        EDIT: the interesting performance gain I noticed was the wheel HP didn't drop off after peak like before the MAF. It only dropped 0.9rwhp where as before there was a larger decrease of around 2-3rwhp.

          4-5rwhp more from just swapping to a used $50 MAF sounds like cheap power to me. Good stuff.

            Damn right!

            But i'm a little suprised you didn't see more than 4-5rwhp with a 3.0L. Oh well... the motors are obviously flowing well enough.

              Yeah but ti's not that cheap, you can't really run it without the unichip to communicate with it so you would have to get the unichip too which adds a significant amount to the cost.

              I'm taking my car in for the unichip/MAF conversion tomorrow!

                  Cheers fellas....

                  LowR3V'in: Actually 188.2rwhp ;) lol........A Schrick 272/272 was fitted during the rebuild, same time the 3.0L stroker parts were fitted.

                  Barry, I do get what your saying about the low cost of the MAF and since I already had the Unichip....but I guess I was referring more to the misunderstanding of where the big jump in power comes from after someone does the MAF swap.........not the MAF, but the proper tuning (ie piggyback), as I had already gained 15rwhp just from the Unichip tuning alone.

                  Good luck Adam....I'm sure you'll enjoy it very much ;)

                    I know, I was referring to the difference between AFM vs MAF by itself since he already installed the Unichip.

                      You gained a lot more then you think you did.

                      Notice the new power is EVERY WHERE, not just peak, but the whole curve.

                      The area under the curve is much nicer.

                      About the throttle response, are you using as much throttle to take off? Do you have to get into to it to move the at a stop? Does it rev quicker?

                      Peak numbers really do not mean much. What you need to do is drive like this for a month or 2 and then go drive it with the AFM, you will not believe the difference.

                      Almost not other mod will give you the gains you see here!
