My girlfriend's e30 is having some issues. The auto tranny is shifting REALLY late. Like near redline. when it does shift it is harsh. I already changed the filter and fluid - and it's leaking from somewhere else. There was metal in the fluid. This thing needs a new auto, doesn't it? If so - I'm parting it out and buying her an e36. Fuck.

Why go through the hassle of parting our an e30 (if it's good otherwise), and not just get another tranny ??Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

Tranny swap > parting a car
You ever parted a car before? It's such a hassle dealing with all the dumb questions you get, let alone any other crap.
In the end you'd wish you just did even a auto tranny swap - salvage title & all.
Are you thinking parting will bring you big $$$ - or what? I'm just not getting what's so difficult about a tranny swap if the rest of the car is doing you well.
Leave parting for the R3V'ed cars.
:::EDIT::: I just looked at your FS thread with the car in question in it - You're a fool if you break that car, that's my opinion. That's a nice looking Schwarz coupe - hardly a candidate for breaking, and I'd be amazed if you sold the parts for as much as a poorly running whole car, let alone if you just got off your butt & fixed it.
It will be more work parting than to fix if you want to look at it that way.
Fix it, man.Last edited by LINUS; 11-06-2007, 08:53 AM.
It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

And I agree with a previous post about parting an E30. I've done this once before at it is a PITA. The only way it is really feasible w/o being a headache is that you have a designated spot to tear it down (preferrably covered, garage would be better) and all the right tools to make quick work of it. Then you've got to sell everything you don't want.....and shipping some items is inevitable. Unless you're ready for such an undertaking, I'd say repair the GFs car and keep it on the road until you're ready to replace it with something else.

Oh come on Jon. The last e30 I parted out went from driving in to completely dismantled in 2 days, everything worth selling shipped and the shell donated to a local BMW shop within a week, while working 40hr/wk. Man up :)Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast
