I think BMW did a wonderful job making the e46 m3 SO dual purpose. Its a very comfortable ride for a DD and when you go into sport mode you can take it to a track and be out there giving porsche's a run for their $$$.
An e46 is deff superior to an e30 on the track. The e30 is light and that helps a LOT but the e46 has a lot more power and has a far better suspension.
Yeah, I'll give you that..it's a nice ride. I was very dissapointed with reliability. I expected more from bmw, but given how complex cars are nowadays (electronics, etc.) it's difficult to put together a long-term reliable car. My 5 year old e46 sprung an A/C leak inside the dash. That was going to cost me $2500 to fix.
However, I'm flaming SUV's, not M3's. However, SMG is blasphemy.

You are a class A dumbass. Go hug a tree on your walk to work cause you are too good to stoop our levels and drive a classy car.

Do you mean to tell me that the Nina in accounting needs a Jeep Gd Cherokee? She has it because that bitch in receivable has one, and she can't drive a status symbol any smaller than that. She also got a boob job for the same reason.

Here's a question for people that "need" a large vehicle with a 10,000 lb towing capacity: move a 10,000 lb couch lately?
It costs $100-200 to rent a uhaul if you need to move something on occasion.
$50/day to rent a minivan if you want to go out of town with your 6 guests from out-of-town.
Hey, if you work in construction, you indeed need the proper vehicle, and this rant isn't directed towards people in this category.///Alpinweiß II 24v 91' 318is, Alpinweiß III 99' 323i, 04' Yamaha R6 SE for sale, 00' VW GTi, 83' El Camino BURNED, 01' P71sold, 92' Miatasold

you are such a tool. Did you not read his post? Have you EVER been to a track? The e46s are fucking AMAZING on the track. Learn your shit before you post dumbass
dude, learn my shit? read the post? maybe you should read it.. It's titled "X3 or X5".. There's no "E46" or "track" in the title. At least I stick to the point, idiot. You on the other hand, can't come up with any arguments, and, instead tried to discredit my intelligence. BRAVO, that's so original... Nobody has ever done that before.
But just to entertain you, I owned an E46, and I've been to the track. And they do handle well.. that isn't the point.

You brought up the e46..........fail
back to the topic on hand.
Among the 2, the X3 seemed a lot more "natural" to me due to its smaller size, but the X5 isn't TOO big in my opinion. I felt that the X3 would be a better DD simply b/c it can navigate traffic easier, and will be cheaper both price wise and maint. wise in the long run.-1992 325i -

I sold my e46 when I noticed every other 16 year old kid was driving a slush-o-matic e46..

I can afford to drive my x5 4.4 that gets 16.6 MPG in town and I like it. I don't give a flying fuck if you think I'm bothering roadways, using excess fuel, or generally disturbing the peace. I'm 6'4", 230 lbs and I like the fact that I fit nicely in it. Plus, it hauls all my shit for practice, school, and meetings. On top of that, everything works and it has a myriad of luxuries that most other SUV's or other DD's don't have. AND, it's a BMW. End of the day, I can't think of a better car to have for a DD. Plus, this thing would smoke the shit out of 90% of the e30's on this board in straight line, breaking, and cornering.
Grow a pair, and join the "MEN" that you refer to. I'm sick of this whiny bull shit.PNW Crew

Here are a few pictures of the gas hog/un-rational/"MAN" vehicle at night that I took recently given the e30 is down and not up for a photo shoot:
You just can't beat it for a parts getter/DD/date car... only way to make it better is to make it a 4.6is or the x5 LM (in my dreams).
EDIT:
And it got 24.4 MPG on reg. gas over to Boise from Eugene last summer. I went there, and drove around for a day before I had to gas up.
a pic on the way there infront of what I call the "shoe tree"

def. get the X5. I feel like the X3 is very cheaply made in comparison to the X5. I drive plenty of both every week. If you do get the X3 make sure you get the leather and not the fake whatever material it is- I have redone atleast 10 drivers seats-that have ripped apart.
the X5 is alot more TRUCK feeling whereas the X3 feels like (and is) my wifes E46 touring with a little lift kit.- except the steering feels way to light.
we get alot more X3s in for repairs, but we also have alot more X3 customers.
oh and for you mr. I hate trucks and 20" wheels-------EAD my daily is a 1500 chevy with 20s--and you can kiss lick my nutz
