Reminder: Always put personal safety first!

I just had a friend get hurt pretty bad because he was careless and didn't take the time to use a proper set of jackstands under the E28 he was pulling parts off of. Very difficult way to learn the lesson of personal safety superseding everything else, no matter what. I hate hearing about fellow enthusiasts getting injured in some accident that could have been prevented, especially when that person should have known better.

And for those curious, The friend in question was at one of the more recent meets, the Lehigh Vally one that was on E30Tech. He was in the burgundy E28. Here's the news link:

Hope he has a full recovery. This is one reason I don't get under pick-n-pull cars, they just seem too wobbly.

I recently upgraded my 2ton jackstands for 6ton jackstands.. Those 2 tons jackstands were wobbly.. I decided not to mess around, and went for the really-really stable ones.

The 2-ton don't have a very wide base, so it's not very difficult to flip them. Here's what happened to me...

I put the front end on jack-stands, then attempted to raise the back. My jack has wheels, but on my garage floor it doesn't slide very easy.. Also, while the back wheels are touching the ground, raising the back end creates tension against the front jackstands, since raising the car changes the geometry.. On several occasions the jackstands under the front wheels almost fell over because the base doesn't provide enough stability.

So, spend $30 on big-ass jackstands

yeah, the kind used for motorhomes are great too - they can also lift the car up much higher, and are MUCH wider and sturdier.

I go so far as to keep my cell phone within arms' reach so I can hit 911 if something goes really wrong. I live alone & realistically it could be 48-72 hours before friends/family just decides to show up & see why I'm not returning calls.

I have some big ol' jackstands, but I don't take anything for granted.

But I'm also one of those sissy-guys who always wear earplugs, and most of the time wear safety glasses when doing anything worthwhile in the garage. I take all that stuff home from work, and they encourage it.

Glad to hear your friend is ok! Your health is the most important thing. Wish I had read this earlier tonight. I was angle grinding some rust off and my glove got caught up and sucked my finger in sawed my ring finger nail in half and cut me up pretty bad. ill show a lil more respect next time.
