There has been much speculation concerning the possible return of the 8 series. Most believe it will take the form of the recent CS concept:

Although it's intended competition or market niche seems to be more uncertain than it's eventual existence. Most initially believed it would compete directly with the Merc CLS, although a new motion has been made that this car may actually occupy a price bracket above the CLS and as a course will more compete with the Merc CL. Interesting to say the least. I hardly doubt an "M8" will be born as the M6 already pushes the envelope of the "M" design ideology, much in the same as we will probably never see an M7 or MX5 (miata puns aside). They probably will offer an equivalent of a "csi" option though, much in the same as the movement for a "135tii" instead of an actual M1 (which is historic and significant). Of course M-pack treatments will probably be offered just as they are offered across the board. Meh.
