    Actually, the E30 318i M10 lost weight, compared to the E21 320i.
According to the 3- Series Enthusiast's Companion:
    E21 320i...2500
    E30 318i 1984...2360
    E30 318is...2602
Also, converting to the plastic bumpers doesn't save much weight at all. I figured the weights from the ETK, and the total weight saving was 4.4 pounds:
    Front aluminum = 23.73 pounds
    Front plastic = 20.37 pounds
    Rear aluminum = 26.55 pounds
    Rear plastic = 25.51 pounds

M10 weighs 335? Is it full of lead? Sorry, I don't believe that figure.
The 318i M10 is 242 lbs lighter than the 318is M42, partly because of the engine. Drive one and tell me it is heavier in the front than a 318is.
ETK shows 90.5 kg for a reman M10 short engine. Add manifolds and the number is 100.5 kg, or 221 lbs.
A reman M42 short engine weighs 110 kg. Add manifolds for a total of 119.7 kg, or 267 lbs.

                      Bumper Shock weights

It would help if you specified which shock, but here goes:
                      Aluminum front....2.73 lbs
                      Aluminum rear....3.17 lbs
Plastic front....2.15 lbs left, 2.43 lbs right (what?)
                      Plastic rear....1.98 lbs
That is the bare shocks, no bolts, brackets, etc.
                      HTH,
                      John

My guess is the difference is in the provision for the tow hook.

Oh snap. I say to pick a find a retarded thread and post that, and look what happens.

                            So it's like that?

                                Good call, Bill.
                                Duh...I just wasn't thinking.
After I spent two weeks looking for a reasonably priced screw-in towing eye for my 318i plastic bumper conversion.
I ended up buying an E36 tool kit, on the off chance that the towing eye would work. I already knew the ETK showed a different part number. Well, FYI, it works. The threads are the same...the only difference is the plating and the length. The E36 towing eye is slightly longer, and it has silver colored plating, instead of the yellowish plating of the E30 eye.
