I'm in the same boat as homegrone30, I used to work at a jiffylube, and the work was sometimes iffy, but usually pretty good. I personally would take my car to the one I worked at, but I do it myself, so theres no need.

without lab test, when we take our car to reputable auto shop ; how can we tell from the dip-stick if the oil is synthetic or regular ? assuming we paid for the synthetic.

I can't. I used to work at Jiffy too. The manager was a lazy piece of shit and wouldn't do half the services. The only reason I took my car in there was because I did the work and I could do other services for free. Many of the workers are too lazy to use the bottled synthetic so they just throw conventional in there. Place really sucks. My manager things that when you add fluid to the reservior (sp), it cranks up the pressure in the system because it runs off vacuum and you destroy your calipers, rotors, drums and pads/shoes. He tried telling me that 300ZX and Supras are AWD and do awesome donuts.
He has also blown up about 2 transmissions by fucking up the flushes. One kid left the drain plug out of a brand new truck.

My stupid ass coworker brings his POS late model Cavalier to those places, and we're mechanics! WTF. I don't have much respect for him anyway, but that adds a little extra icing on the cake :)

the only way you can really tell is if they pour it from a bottle the regular is always out of the pump

Before I really got into cars and working on them myself, I always took my car to Oil Can Henry's.

At least there, you actually got to watch them do the whole thing, and make sure they were using what you asked for.

LONG LONG TIME AGO...I went to a "fast Lube" place - and they asked my permission to remove my drain plug and install a "valve" kind of thing. I asked to see one. The tech pulled it out and it was a brass valve.

I quickly pictured in my head running over a small tree branch - backing up and then having my oil spill all over the place.

It's a great scam - you figure that you get 20-50 cars a day. Your profit on each car is $50 or so. And your rent is $2000 a month

                        Do the math - it's $25-75k a month.

A couple summers ago the place I work for hired a guy who came from a midas( A quicky lube brakes and exhaust type place)

We had him do a tuneup on a dakota shop truck.
Idiot replaces 2 out of 6 plugs and changed the oil but left the original filter on.
When we found the new parts in the garbage the next day he was sent packing.
Where are they breeding these lazy assholes?
