Crap.. PO mailed me spare key.. Mail gets here, key is gone!

Title says it all. I had forgotten to get the spare key last time I saw him, so he offered to mail it to me. Mail comes yesterday, and there's a slight 2" slit on the left side of the letter. Key is missing.

Do you think someone legitimately stole my key in hopes to steal the car? Or do you think it somehow got pushed out of the envelope during delivery on accident.. I tend to think its the former, but why would the thief not keep the envelope too?

The only semi-good news is that the car has an alarm on it which activates when the door is opened. The bad news is that the alarm does not cut the ignition. Just makes noise.

Called BMW, and a full set of locks (doors/ignition/keys) would run $307. Ouch, especially for an expense that should have been totally unnecessary.

    ARGH This is so frustrating!!!

he should have used a better envelope.. there are heavy ones at the post office you can get for free, rather than one meant for a letter.

that really suxx because you don't know if the one who stole your key also noticed your adress. if the did he has the key and knows where to find the car. maybe you know someone who is selling a complete set of locks.
do you have a garage for your car? or do you park it outside of your house?

If he mailed it in an actual letter envelope.. he is a moron.

It got pressed out by a roller, no one stole it.

It should have been sent in a bubble envelope or a box.

For the cost, you're better off getting the car re-keyed.

This was a spare key. Don't you think it would be a LOT cheaper to just get a copy made of his first key? $5 < $300?

Its worth it to me to have full coverage on my eta. It is parked at my apartment complex with stupid ass college kids and I commute a lot in it. I can't afford to be out a reliable car.

Okay, problem is solved for now: Bought a Club wheel lock thing, and am keeping the alarm armed.

I park on the street in downtown atlanta, so probably not a bad idea anyways.

Should have gotten one of these instead:

                    http://www.amazon.com/The-Club-Auto-.../dp/B000L9T7AY

To get a normal club off, all you have to do is take a hacksaw to the steering wheel.

How bad is your record? I seriously pay $70-something /6 months for comp on my M3.

If you have a reasonably clear record, comp isn't much on these cars.
                            ----------------------------------

OP, look into comp if the envelope was cleanly opened. If it's sort of torn, forget it.

If you look into comp, realize a lot of companies have an exclusionary period, like 30-90 days for complete loss. Read & ask all questions up front, insurance agents tend to be slippery little eels unless you nail them down.

Can you park in a garage at home, or if it's an apt., is there secured parking?

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.
