Got the basics on a ~91 i think Ford Probe GT, but then really learned in my current e30, 325ic. Bought it, didn't have a record of its timing belt change so i was going to order and install it the following week when I could. Unfortunately I was practicing late at night on a road extension and it snapped =(. Instead of just putting on a different head I just got it rebuilt, and fortunately the pistons were fine. I don't regret that but it was expensive.

My Dad tried to teach me on his 81 924... didn't go well ;)

I ended up buying an 84 CRX for my second car that was much easier to learn on!

Learned to drive stick on a b18 swapped honda civic coupe. Interesting to say the least. Became good at driving stick on my 318.

I learned on my dad's mint '66 Mercedes Benz 230sl 4 speed. My dad's reaction was priceless the first time I got the car moving...probably because I lit up the rear tires!

All the cars I've ever owned (3) were automatic - but the first stick I ever drove was a POS Mk2 jetta, a perfect car to learn in because it was worn out and worth nothing. Then I had to drive a new Hyundai Accent (god what a POS, and it was scary as hell in the rain). I'd also driven an 05 WRX and a 1991 300zx.

My skills were honed in the E30 though. basic shifting was easy with the smooth getrag and 4.10s (it's nearly impossible to stall my car). however controlled shifts are more difficult. Now I can heel/toe downshift as a matter of reflex rather than a concious decision - it took a lot of practice, but I don't feel bad as my car has only been manual for a year and a half. Most people I know who can drive stick have no idea what heel/toe even is..

Learned on my oldest sister's '81 CJ-7, soon after she got it at age 16... I was probably around 12. Took it out soon after my dad got it for her and everyone was gone (I lived on a big circle street :))
