    Looking at a 1973 911T w/ new engine + tranny

Who knows much about the original 911's? I assume maintenance costs are going to be way up there, but damn this looks like a fun car. Can someone point me in teh right direction for porsche forums?

And no, this doesn't mean I won't get another E30.

    Thanks fellas

Actually just sold our 72 911 which we fully rebuild when I was in high school, so I know a bit. early 911s are old, clunky, loud, shift poorly, but they are mucho mucho fun to drive. Parts are super expensive compared to E30s, and quality mechanics cost even more. They arent for the budget minded person, but if you have the funds, they are well worth it.

Thanks Rob, that's exactly what I needed to know.

I'm going to call the mechanic who has maintained the car since 1980 on Monday to see what's up.

All i can say is my next car better be a 911. I love all 911s even the ones dating back to the early 70's. Engine work must be a pain in the ass. That flat six looks to be nestled in there nice and tight. I assume ill get a 70 something 911, after college, put some hollow spoke porsche turbo wheels on it, paint it black and ill be set

Like what Rob mentioned....the early 70s vintage 911s are not cheap cars. I would imagine an E30 M3 being more affordable when it comes to buying parts and maintenance. However, this vintage of the 911 is a light and spirited performer. The curb weight of these cars is somewhere around 2200-2300lbs.....and a carburated flat-6 is a true mechanical orchestra. Many deep-pocketed PCA/POC track junkies like snatching up these "featherweights" and dumping in big horsepower to make a true road/track rocket. I know of one such local car (a '72 coupe) with a highly tweaked 3.6 993 motor making upwards of 400 bhp and body kit with massive flares and equally impressive steamroller-like wheels.

Ok, enough of that tangent....back to your inquiry. Here are some sites to check out:

          The Porsche Enthusiast Site

flat-6.net is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, flat-6.net has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

Also, pick up the mag "Excellence, The Magazine About Porsche." The August 2004 issue has a silver Boxster S gracing the cover. Although I don't have a Porsche I like to get this mag because of its great motorsports coverage (past and present), Porsche history, good tech write-ups, and a column called "Market Update" where they go into general detail about a specific model/series of Porsche car. The August 2004 issue goes over '74-'89 911s.
