Took the 318iS out for a drive...a long, long drive........

So today I embarked on a journey to go to Moscow, ID (30mi north of Lewiston on the map) to pick up my girlfriend since she'd been up there at a funeral, and I figured she could use a familiar face. Instead of taking the route I had planned on directly north from Boise, and the route that Route 66 gave me, I chose (against better judgement) to follow MapQuest.

    Moral: Never trust MapQuest.

Here's what I ended up doing:

It seemed logical enough to me to go through Oregon, then up to Washington and pop back into Idaho because I'd be travelling on at least 4-lane interstates vs a 2-lane sketchy highway through the twisties (again, I said no why??), but oh how I was wrong. The resulting trip, instead of being a simple 680 miles, turned out to be 1113 miles in 12h26m. Needless to say, it has been a long, long day's worth of driving.

On a final note, I picked up a Passport 8500 X50 for the road trip (couldn't get ahold of Sean in time to side-by-side compare it with the V1) and I highly recommend it. The range seems significantly farther than the normal Passport 8500, there are more features/programs and it is available in a choice of blue or red. ooooo aaaaaah. Cool part is that it paid itself off in the first 20 minutes after I stuck it on the windshield, and at least 4-fold over the entire trip (Assuming if I had gotten a ticket I just pressed on, balls to the wall).

that's a lot of driving in one day! after driving to ken's house and back in 8 hours, my brain felt like mush.. (my car with the bottlecaps is a teeth-rattling ride)

Highway trips are so much fun.

How do you find the 318is on the highway? I'm looking to buy another e30 and I really don't know if I want a 318is or a 325.

Do you think it would be worth selling a regular passport 8500 for around $150 and getting a new passport 8500 x50 for $270?

So, Kris, how much gas did you use up? You got a chip - so that's permium.

I'm sure it was a fun drive though? ;)

                  Chris-mush is an understatement

spencer-very well. on the way back, on that twisty section we were racing tara's cousin in her 98 Jetta (also with a 1.8L 4) and we had the top-end, no doubt. No doubt. I highly recommend the 318iS, because if you want power, you don't want an M20 anyway.

jweb- definitely. However, I still think I'll go with the V1.

                  Cam- hah

                  Sean-shoulda came with ;)

New York from MD is as far as I've gone. 5 1/2 hours to the worst roads in the US.

And then back two days later. I still commend you though. Musta brought alot of music, how did you keep yourself from dying of boredom?

                    EDIT: E30 Moddarrrrr woooo

Why buy an E30 and waste money on it when you could have [insert car here] which is [faster|nicer|cooler|newer|cheaper|anything]?

I drove from Winston-Salem, NC to Fairfax, VA (Almost Washington, DC) and back in one day when I went to pick up my 318is. Left at 6 in the morning, returned about 7 that evening. No stops on the way home, 330 miles on a little over 3/4 tank. Sure beats my uncle's FISO.

"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."
