There's nothing wrong with having children in your late 30's or mid 40's, tons of people do it. All I read was go to the expensive school or go to a 2 year college, there should be a great 3rd option, a 4 year state university. I have been to 2 of them and the education was very similar to if not better than private school, and it's a lot easier than transferring after 2 years.

ive thought of going to state school, but OSU is truly a factory. I couldnt be just a number. If anything, the sheer fact that the private school will be costing me 15000/yr is going to be encouragement enough to stay in school and finish.

            *snicker* too right.

bmwannabe, whether you decide to go to college or just enter the working world (and after 8 years in IT, listen to me when i say GO TO FUCKING COLLEGE), you'd better get used to that "being a number" thing.

pretty much any school big enough to be accredited is going to be like that... & unless you get lucky with some startup companies like i did for a while, your job is going to be like that.

once you're 18, you're not John Smith anymore, you're XXX-XX-XXXX anytime it matters... get used to it :)

Then why do you care about being a 'number'?

well, at OSU the student to faculty ratio is some crazy ass # like 1400:1. The college im going to is somewhere around 13:1. The environment with a 13:1 ratio would obviously be better (for me). A larger environment would be worse for me, i probably wouldnt care about my grades, and neither would my professors. I need my professors to be on my ass.

The student:faculty ratio at Ohio State University is 14:1
                    Most frequent class size: 20-29
                    Most frequent lab & sub-section size: 10-19

Oh and if you need someone else to be there for your grades you aren't ready to spend the BIG bucks for private education. They won't ride you in either setting, you gotta want it. That's what growing up means, they give you a lot more freedom and see what happens. That's the value of the paper as much as what you actually learn.

What the hell do you think college is? High school all over again? You're going to be in for an unpleasant surprise. I don't care what college you go to; the professors won't give a shit whether or not you do the work (and 'the work' usually consists of a few mid-term exams and a final). I went to Gonzaga U for a year (where the student faculty ratio is like 11:1), and I've been at the U of Oregon for two years and the ratio is like 20:1. There is NO difference between the amount of pressure (or lack there of) that professors will put on you to perform in class. Plus at large research-based universities you'll have access to much higher caliber professors.

Why the hell does everyone care about class size? I don't get it. I've been in a class with 500 people and learned a hell of a lot more than other classes I've been in with less than 20 people. I did the whole 'small school - small class sizes' thing and I go so fed up the miniscule amount of classes that the school offered that I went to a larger state university. I've been so much more happy at the larger school... there are award-winning faculty in just about all of the 75+ departments. Class posibilites are endless. If you want a really broad liberal (I don't mean politically liberal) education then go to a large university. If all you care about is business or some other small niche, then go to a school that specializes in that, such as Babson or Carnegie-Mellon.

To be totally blunt, there is a lot you need to understand about college, and life in general.

In college, its up to you to learn the subject matter. The prof lectures, answers a few questions, and its your JOB to understand and apply the material. Its preperation for the real world where your boss isn't going to have time to explain how to do every task he assigns you. He'll give you a project, and its your JOB to get it done.

OSU might be huge, but its not like you're going to be in a class with all 60,000 students at once. You might have large lecture, but as you progress thru your major, the classes get smaller. You're basically in class with the people in your major/college.

College may not seem like its invovled at all in your plans to buy/sell real estate. But, for starters, you're going to need a day job to start and get $$. You're probably going to need a degree if you want a day job that's flexible and pays well. Once you get into the "real world" you've got retirement to plan for, utilities, food, car payments etc. Secondly, college is a learning experience. Its about developing discipline, learning how to learn, and developing a mind for whatever academic field you're interested in.

Case in point, I go to a college with 6,000 students (a small/medium school). Most of my engineering profs know me by name, but they sure as heck aren't going to stop me from ditching class, blowing off homework, or not studying. At the end of the day, its my responsibility to get the work done. Prof gets his/her salary either way.

I'd do community college for 2 years then transfer and graduate from a 4 year. Nobody will ever pay attention to your time at the CC. They will only look at the diploma from the 4 year.

You should probably be able to get by paying for a comunity college yourself and only let your dad help out if you really need it or he has the extra $$.
