m42 are great engines.... I love both of mine...one in an e30 and one in a 2002.
If the "noise" goes away above 3k rpm then replace the timing chain tensioner. If they go bad then the chain will go slack and there is a possibility it will skip a tooth or even snap. I had an m42 snap a chain.....bad things happen then.
