    buying a car in Canada

As a US citizen that lives 30 minutes from the border, what are the steps to purchase an '87 E30 in Canada and get it into the country? Has anyone does this before? It's got the diving board bumpers, so I assume everything is up to federal DOT standards. Do I have to actually have the car shipped or can I drive it across?

If I have to ship, could I just have the guy sell it to someone who is a dual citizen, have the middle man transfer the title in Canada and drive it across and register in the US, then sell it to me? Would that work?

These guys do it all the time. I see them selling a lot of Euro market cars and the Canada only M540i. http://www.willz.ca/importing.htm

Thanks John...the car checked out on carfax, so I think I'm gonna go buy it. It's got mint grey houndstooth sport interior :)

it has to meet federal DOT, EPA, and NHTSA standards. an 87 should be no problem, but most of the later cars I've seen don't have airbags and you can't import those (easily).

I've got a letter of conformity from BMW Canada confirming this, so I'm good to go :)

Now the question is...do I sell the grey houndstooth and put my tan vinyl sport interior in? or vice versa...
