Just had one of those moments myself. Lifted the car up to put some tranny fluid in, and noticed one of my driveshaft-to-output flange bolts was at a weird angle. Sure enough, the nut was finger-loose. Tightened that sumbitch up, and now the vibration I was having in 3rd to 4th is 99% gone. Good thing I caught that thing before it broke or something!

heh, I remembered I'd forgotten to torque down one of my front hub nuts - fortunately I hadn't driven very far. it was only hand tight, supposed to be around 250ft-lbs :o

Did you check the rest of the bolts to be sure no others were loose?

I once thought "man, I wish I hadn't gone in there" when I just got done replacing my timing belt. I had a moment of panic and thought I hadn't tightened the belt pulley bolt. Sure enough I had and everything was fine.

I might have a little OCD because I check bolts two or three times in the next few days after a vital project.

I feel that way every time I finish something extensive. So many nuts and bolts. I kinda do the squinty face when I start a motor after some work. I replaced a waterpump the other day and got everything out and back in and even though I'm 99% sure that everything is where it is supposed to be, and tight, there's still that 1% that has me kinda uneasy.

I think everyone has hatred for waterpumps so most of you know what feeling I'm talking about.

But I usually never screw it up which is nice.

Yep, they were all good. I'll probably jack it back up today and check again, just to be sure that one is still tight.

I put in my 19# fuel injectors last weekend and BOTH fuel lines running into the FPR cracked on the end and I was having trouble getting them to seal up right after cutting off the cracked areas, dumping fuel all over the place. I finally got them to seal up right but I've been checking my engine bay like every time I drive it to make sure i'm not leaking any fuel. Paranoia's gonna getcha @_@

Hahaa...wow, if you guys go nuts doing a timing belt.... Just imagine my nervousness turning over my rebuilt motor after a month working on it.

I never had so much excitement and relief ever in my life when the motor sprang to life...wooow. It's all about being thorough!



Funnny thing? Turns out one of my head bolts was neglected, in that I forgot to do the last 90deg turn on the top middle head bolt. LOL So, I'm doing a headgasket when I get home. heheh

I'm not so bad about worrying if I tightened everything. For me, it is different noises. If any little vibration or noise pops up, I immediately notice, try to figure out what it is, and check all of the possibilities. My frinds think I'm crazy, but that is how I fixed my oil leak (chain tensioner bolt on the M42 was backing out), alternator, giubo, wheelbearings, and other stuff.

I'm having one of those moments right now. I was trying to chase down this long running hard-to-start-when-warm problem, so I was running down the list in the Bentley. I get to the "test fuel injectors" and they are all working, but I decide to take them out and clean them up and put on some new rings. There was some crap on them so it was worth checking out, until I dropped one and busted the tip. Now I'm out $80 waiting for next day delivery on a new one. For some reason I can't listen to old sayings like "if its not broke, don't fix it".

Its even worse when you work on other peoples cars for a living. The guy in the bay next to me is a total fuck up. he just had to replace a piston and re build the head in an m54 due to his lack of paying attention to a DISA flap. Fuck i wish he would be fired...

I love pulling my car in once a week and putting it on the lift to check stuff out that needs attention. Never really discourages me, just makes me aware that driving a 20 year old car means spending some extra time and money to make sure everything is safe. I feel confidant that my car is mechanically safe and sound, probably more so than most of the jalopies driving on the streets next to me.
