Lee is right: the concern when the M3 was being designed, in 1986 or so, was that they wouldn't be able to get 8000+RPM for the DTM out of a six cylinder. Some say that the F1 engine and the S14 bear striking resemblances to each other - I am not convinced that that is particularly relevant. I am also not aware of the fact that the S14 and the S38 had anything in common, but if someone has solid information I'd like to hear all about it.
As to rally cars, Mariano is right. Heck, even Porsche ran its 911s in rally trophies (and won, significantly, as they tend to do) until the rise of 4WD. The Lancia engines were a direct product of legislation, as hendrixvodu pointed out. And there are a lot of stories regarding those engines, but that's another story for another time.
BTW Mariano - the F1 four cylinder engine came before the S14, not after :) It was ready in 1982. The relationship, if it exists - and let's say that for a million and one reasons, I think it's pure retconning - would be the other way around.

The s14 and the m88 are designed by the same engineer and are very much in common with each other. Also, I think Mariano is aware that the f1 motor came before the m3.

Yeah, looking over the past entrants into DTM, there was a wiiiide variety of platforms and powerplants!

Tis true, the S14 is basically an M88 minus 2 cylinders.

Pretty sure the F1 engine ran junkyard M10 blocks which is the predecesor to the S14 block.

Back in the early 1980's BMW was compainging e30 323s and e24 635 in GrpA. They did okay but some improvement was required. Initially, the M3 was designed for GrpA but it lasted only one year before GrpA got canned. But even in its first race, the M3 was several seconds faster per lap, over the e24.

The Motorsport 6 cylinder engines were based on Apfelbeck's work, and then Paul Rosche's work on the M12 family of 4 pot motors with 16 valves, dating from the early 1970s and evolving up into the 1983 twin-turbo F1 motors. And it paid off. BMWs were installed in everything from F3 to F1, and many racecars. The e30 M3 was just a return to its roots while its S14 engine was a production version of the M12/X line of factory race motors.

Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

In the second pic down, what does the intake come out of? It almost looks like a small blower.
