The factory interval is 60,000 miles for the timing belt, at which point the water pump should also be replaced, however, we've never recommended that sort of length. Finding a car with 50k (or less) on her timing belt thats broken is not uncommon.

We recommend replacing at 45,000 miles, which is sooner, yes, but necessary if you want to ensure a strong link with cam gear. Always replace the water pump with the timing belt. The timing belt tensioner actually uses the water pump as loaded surface, so to remove the water pump is to remove the belt. And if you're doing a belt you might as well do a water pump :)

What does it usually cost to have a shop do this and what do just the parts cost?

It's not even worth it to have a shop do it. Changing the water pump and timing belt is seriously SOOOOO easy.

I was just curious because the guy I am buying the car from just had this done, and I can tell him that I'd just do it myself. Thanks guys. I hope I get this freakin' car.
