It probably helps a little, but it'd work a whole lot better if it sealed against the hood all the way to the driver's fender. There's a big hole where heat can get in right there.

        i've got one of these...

had to modify it to fit...i couldn't find a cylindrical
filter with a small enough diameter to fit with the
shield...i could only find a cone shaped filter...had
to notch it just a bit to fit around that upper radiator
hose...i figure it's better than nothing...

our local BMW parts guy bought the existing stock
of z3 1.9 CAI tubes...it would be cool to take a couple
of those and try to configure a setup that puts the filter
below headlight level to draw air from underneath...

we're all smokin' crack anyway if we think a
cone filter is better than the stock box...it just looks
and sounds cool...and sucks a bunch of crap into
        the intake...

I never even thought he was not reputable, he has great feedback, & just promptly replied to my question sent to him via eBay. I just thought I would ask before I bid. I figure you guys know alot more than I do.

            Thanks

i wasn't doggin' on him either...but if someone asks the product, it's only fair to
let them know of my experience--good or bad--and that the product *might* not
              be a simple bolt-on...that's all...

i have this heatshield, i think it helps as opposed to just the cone filter sitting there in the engine bay, what i did was put a foam copper pipe insulator along the top of the heatshield, so that it seals up against the hood...next is covering the section that is left open between the fender and the heatshield...

Guys read the add...fits 88+, 84-87 requires modification.

And you dont really need a seal on top because the hood closes right against it.

                          Gentlemen,

I have been making and selling these things for 4 years. I started with aluminum, but quickly realized that this only conducted heat. I did some research and found that ABS plastic was the best bet.

The shield is a direct slide in modification for the 88-91 E30 6 cylinder cars with the BAVARIAN AUTOSPORT style intake kit. I say BAVARIAN AUTOSPORT style, but really many tuners sell the exact same kit. Anyone who has this kit installed on their 88+ E30 and possess and common sense can install the shields in two minutes tops. It literally slides right into place.

The problems come when people try to fit my shield on cars with cheap ass eBay kits with wide K&N knockoff cones. While it is possible to make my shield work with this kit, modification is required. Another option is to buy a cheap kit for the bracket and AFM adaptor and then buy a true K&N cone (long and skinny).

The shield has an OEM BMW gasket on the top of it. This seals the shield against the top of the hood. People who make homemade shields often use cut rubber hoses. This does nothing!

While I openly admit that I would like to find a way to seal the shield off completely to the driver side fender, the coolant container, cruise control, and all the other crap found in that area make that near impossible. The only way this opening may let hot air into the shielded area, is if the car is sitting after a long drive. Think about it. When you are moving forward, cool air is rushing into the shielded area behind the headlights. The air is entering the shielded are and moving towards the back of the car. This movement is keeping the warm air out!

The shield also blocks turbulence and dust. Normally an exposed K&N cone will have to fight for air over the turbulence of the engine fan. The shield prevents the fan from sucking away your intake air. Also, once installed, you will notice the bad of the shield gets very dirty from road grime getting kicked up in the engine bay. If the shield was not there, all the grime would be landing right on your filter. The shield keeps your filter cleaner longer.

If you want the most out of your cars intake system, you need a cone intake with a shield. Buy a kit and buy my shield. You won't see a better combination.

While I currently only have E30 6 cyl shields and E30 M3 shields, I just placed an order for a new supply of plastic. I will again be making M42 shields and E36 6 cyl shields. The E36 shields have been a huge hit! A buyer in Dallas testes my shield against a $300 shield and found the results were about even! Not bad considering mine costs less then 1/3 of the price of the "more famous" shield.

If my new job frees up my weekend days again, I may even move to the E46 and even Audi/VW/Honda/etc.

FWI: I have a poor mans patent on the design. :)

i have a genuine K&N filter...no one in my town stocks the cylindrical models for
3" intake, so i choose to opt for what was available...

this would be perfect for me since i have a 87 and it acts as a heatshield and brackets to fit on the cone filter....right now I am using a cut up top half of my old filter box to support it butt i think its aluminum soo that would be bad!
