I've heard of people finding black plates in junkyards and then getting a personalized plate with the same number. That way they can run the black plate with a current sticker and not worry about it.
Don't do it though, because I'm going to and I don't even know why I told you about it.

I was asking this question long ago. I still have the awesome 1986 Sunset plate for my 325e. Now if I get an ELP with those same numbers "2CUGXXX" can I once again put the old plate on? I heard once its retired its retired. This would be so fucking awesome.

I know someone personally who has done exactly that. He got an old plate, paid for a custom CA plate and got the old plate number as his new one. Once the plate came with the stickers, he just put them on the old one and put the new one in his trunk. I doubt anyone is going to hassle him, but if they do he has the new one to back it up.
The thing is, if a cop runs the plate number, everything's legit because that number is a custom one matching his car.

happy days! a couple years ago in this thread I mentioned my fascination with the pacific wonderland plates from the oregon centennial in the 50's. Well now they're running a special 40,000 plates for Oregon's 150yr anniversary. I ran down to the DMV and $133 (ouch) later, TADA!!
Nice work, glad I picked up on this thread and found the custom plate website. Anyone ever actually pull off getting a personalized registration and then using a custom retro plate?
we have a shit ton of plate options here, including one for just about every nascar driver
oh and did i mention no front plate
Us too. I cant even describe how much i hated having a front plate. This is the Guy Harvey plate I just put on the alpine e30. Not sure if i should use the plate filler or not.
And if i ever decide to pick up an e24 (i want one badly) this will go on!

I wonder if PA has something like that? I'll have to look into it... Cause our normal plates are but ugly. That's why i got a RR plate on my e30. And the Antique tag on my Corvair looks almost like a normal PA plate with a Ford Model A on it. WTF PA?, i don't want a Damn Ford on my tag ..
I love the plate i have on my e30,
The gay one on the Corvair :|
you can still get black dare plates if you know some people hah
i wish i could get the CA blue plate back. my peugeot had it back when it was my dad's but then it got hit by a car in 2003 or 4 and was branded...then it got these new plates
Delaware had old black tags which were porcelain. They were single digit to 5 digit max and you could sell the tag. The tag never expires don't die. You can renew an old tag on another vehicle or the same vehicle 20 years later.
Neat system they have but then again the state is tiny and population is not that much.
