when did bmw's get expensive (lol)

    I'm asking about maintenance.

what year/generation did $100 dealership oil changes / other general maintenance become necessary.

i know w/ the e30 any backyard mechanic can work on them, but when did that change?

    (also price of parts)

    thanks!

it costs that much for your e30 if you take it there. Oil changes are not hard.

As of now, you can change the oil on a newer BMW with just basic tools and a reset tool, but the E60M5 has a computer controlled oil level, so I don't know if you can change that.

I need a reset tool to tell my car dash light to turn off or change colors on my e36 but I could care less about it because it goes away after driving and I know when I changed my oil and how old they are.

Which is the part that would "need" a dealership to perform the task? Loosening the drain plug? Removing the filter? Pouring the oil into the motor?

Swing wild, brake later, don't apologize.

well yes i know how to change oil. i just thought (and was correct) about the dealer reset tool. how much does one cost and can i just bring it to a dealership so they can reset it for free?

i guess the only extra cost in owning a bmw is the higher premium on parts. is that correct?

reset tools can be purchased a ton of places on line.

And the parts really aren't that expensive if you know where to get them.

Funny, my reset tool for both the E30 and E36 is a piece of 16ga wire.

The newer M motors want the special Castrol 10w60 with is about $9-10 a quart... so the cost adds up quick for an oil change. The labor is the cheap part ;)

Of course doing it yourself and even using other brand oil will save you money.

same - I even got fancy and stuck a fuse inline. it's actually a hacked off power wire from an old car stereo. :p
