"If I can't sell it I'll trash it" attitude... Rant

Just had to vent about something I've seen many times now in the for sale forum here and on other E30 sites.

People have things that are typically desired or sold often, and they post them up for sale. Often their asking prices are so high that the masses don't jump all over it, or they list it and expect to find a buyer within a week or something.

Either way, they end up saying "if I can't sell these they go in the dumpster". They are usually unwilling to haggle on pricing and in another few days they toss perfectly good parts that will never find a home on an E30 again.

What type of screwed up attitude is this anyway? Seems super selfish and greedy to me. We have an aging group of cars that will never be made again. We say we like the car and value pristine examples but then trash perfectly good parts, many of which are not made anymore and are 100% useable.

Newsflash, you're not going to make a million dollars reselling E30 parts, but you can at least be a good "car community citizen" and pass on parts you don;t need and cannot sell to others who can use them. If you are not willing to hold out for months waiting for someone to give you the right price... lower your price, give them to a local for free or for a few bucks. Sell them for the cost of shipping and $5, anything but trashing them for no reason other than "if I can't sell them then nobody deserves them".

I know E30 owners are notoriously cheap, but stop taking lowball offers personal and if you can't sell it after a time then lower the price or donate it so that we can keep E30's running for many more years.

Haha, I know the attitude. They probably don't toss the parts in the garbage, but hang onto them then list them on craigslist in another 6 months, at the same inflated price.

I'd rather just give stuff away than to outright throw it out!

theres always 2 sides to everything. after a while selling parts you become bitter to broke ass college kids juicing you on parts that are already cheaper than they could get anywhere else. and then they hit you with "cant you do better? im a broke college kid on a budget" or "can you do it shipped for that price?" fuck that. do your homework, realize a good thing when you see it and pay the price. if it is indeed over priced then by all means counter offer

But that doesn't mean they should just throw the shit away.

The most valuable thing in my life is my time. It's not worth an hour of haggling with lowballing morons/packing/shipping/meeting up with someone for $20 to me. Not even close.

You want parts at the insane low prices I charge for them? Get you ass to my shop and pick it up. Fuck shipping, fuck PayPal, cash only.

Fuck, half the time I help put it on, or at minimum loan tools to get it done.

I don't sell parts fro the money, I do it to help others and share the love.

If anyone ever had the balls to bitch about the prices I charge, they would never ever see another part from me, ever.

Ask anyone who knows me, that is the ONLY way I roll.

I realized that there was no way in hell I was going to get the $500 back for my Corbeau seat and belt so I gave it away for Christmas. I was tired of haggling, taking pictures, all that crap.

Luke, That's nice as sh*t that you go that far. I go to the shop[ I used to work at to get parts for my car, and if they want $100 for a $60 part, I won't say mum, becuase they let me borrow tools to put it on or help take it off, and I know I'm helping get their racecars out to track and even though I am most definitely a broke-ass college student, I'm gonna try and put up as much as I can to be fair. There's no point in me trying to be a baller with nice rims, euro etc. without having any damn money.

This of course still means im; going to track the everloving crap out of my car, but that's a differnet rambling.

I was selling a set of E24 M6 wheels and tires a while ago, and just to clarify these are metric sized so they don't make any tires that fit these rims anymore, at all. The tires actually had decent tread on them, so you'd think they'd be rather sought after. I was selling them for $50 a piece, which included the factory BBS mesh weaves with centercaps in excellent shape.

The best offer I got was $25 for all of them, shipped across the province. He refused to pick them up for free. Needless to say, they met the scrap heap.

I agree with everyone basically. I get tired of listing, taking pics and such. If I get an offer I don't like I'll pass and, as was stated before, hold till later and try again. It's not like it's that hard to list.

I'm also not saying that anyone has to lose money on it either. I'm all for charging for the box and the shipping (and my time if it's that bad) for something I'm giving away free.

I don't see the point in trashing it though, "just because I'm not making a good chunk of $".

I could probably find someone who is willing to take all my stuff off my hands for free, local pick up too.

I just got a few items for a different car for free because the guy couldn't sell, didn't want to deal with shipping etc. Sold some for about $75 so far. I have more time and patience and the parts are now in the hands of people who want/need them. I'll pass on any other parts I cannot sell for shipping/packing cost only.

I concur, It's not worth the TIME of all the hours of email haggling / interchanging parts/ photograghing/ cropping photos/ packing/weighing/ quoting shipping for "$20 SHIPPED".
but rather than toss it..I now scrap it.
                        I just ripped apart 2 BAD e30 tranny's, 1 perfectly good Jetta tranny & 2 perfectly good heads (M10 318 & '95 Jetta).
I got $70 for cast aluminum & $30 for #1 steel (gears, valves, cams, etc.) = $100. And, it only took me a couple hours after work each night (air tools are wonderful!:D).
No packing, shipping nor emailing. Some of this stuff sits for years. Now I have a ton of room for more saleable parts with cash in my pocket.
If I get "I'm a broke college student", or "how about $20 SHIPPED", I usually delete the email. If it's priced accordingly and you CAN'T AFFORD IT, then wait until you can.
I'd rather scrap it than waste my time.

I got to say that since my time around here, I've met many cool people willing to help an E30 brother out.

I really have minimal use for ebay since I started dealing on here.

I have just now reached the point where I have parts from this project that I want to part with, and I have the same help a brother out and let me recoup a little of the cost attitude that most of the people on here have.

Yeah, boxing and shipping is a pain in the ass, but I'm willing to do my part as people have done for me, to help out a fellow sick in the head, OCD inflicted E30 addict.

R3V is the balls in my book...

Holy shit- I agree 100% with Blunt.

Either he's adjusted his meds, or I need some......

                            ;)

I've got shitloads of parts, anyone who's been to my place can vouch for that. I can't tell you the number of times someone has seen this stuff for the first time and said "damn man, you should sell this stuff on Ebay or R3V or something!".... BTDT. I am pretty in tune with the going price for parts, but it's gotten to where I'd rather sell something to a shop or a rebuilder for the same or MORE than someone around here would pay for it than deal with the lowballing and the poor-mouthing.

Oh, and if you can get it for 95% less on Ebay- then stop wasting my time- buy the part on Ebay!!!!! You're not gonna hurt my feelings....But don't be surprised if you get shafted by the seller on purpose or they send you the wrong parts because the don't know WTF they've got.

Blunt summed it up nicely I think- I've got something you want, I don't want or need it- make me a REASONABLE offer and don't annoy the shit out of me and we'll both be happy in the end. I don't need to sell parts to make a living, I do it mostly so I can justify buying new toys.

I agree that most I've run into in E30-land are broke kids who bought their "first bimmer dawg!" but there are also some seriously cool cats I can't wait to meet some time.

I've also never had so much hassle dealing with wack-@$$ people scamming and being lazy when selling. Guess it works both ways.

I don't let it get to me though, I took the car out today and romped on it a bit. Yeah, I think I'll keep buying stuff for it. ;)
